Did I miss something? I meant Georgina Elizabeth Elwain McDonald was born Mar 1858 in England and christened April 1859 in India.

What are you saying Bruce? I've lost it.

Oh good grief I put 1858 and 1859 and then I looked back at it and looked at the wrong thing and changed it to 1868 and 1869.

I understand me even if nobody else does and I understand you and you will just have to take my word for it, lol.

Yes the christening was 'a year and x weeks' later and not just 'x weeks later'. So it makes sense. The whole thing would have gone a lot more smoothly if TOG had just told us to start with the _name_ the birth was registered under!

Madmeg always assume stupid mistake and not attempt to be clever, lol.

I'm confused.com

Georgina Elizabeth McElwain was born 1858 in London City, April May June quarter Ref 1C 61
I didnt find her christening in 3rd Bombay Regiment records at the India Office, but, as he had the alias of Alfred McDonald she may well have been Christened Georgina Elizabeth McElwain McDonald after arrival in India, do you know the Town ??
I have the regimental history of the 109th Regiment that the 3rd Bombay Army became, so I would like to tie the Christening into the place in the book

Can you tell me who the 1868, 1869 you mention refers to ??

And who was baptised/christened 1 year and 6 weeks after birth

Quote "the whole thing would have gone a lot smoother if TOG had given the name"

I'm still confused .com....What name ??

I'm sorry, I am 73 so you have to make a few allowances for that, its My Alkaseltzer Disease, its getting worse

This was posted by Bruce, and as a result it prompted discussion about a 6-week old baby being whisked away to India and being baptised there.

"Oops - Georgina was in fact born in India too??

Georgina Elizabeth Elwain McDonald
Birth: 20 MAR 1858
Christening: 02 MAY 1859 Bombay, Maharashtra, India
>>> Father: William Alfred Elwain McDonald
Mother: Ann
Source Information:
Batch No.: C001549 "

I just made the observation that, according the this post, Georgina Elizabeth Elwain McDonald was born in March 1858 in England, and baptised in May 1859 in Bombay. So she was not a 6-week old baby, but aged about 13 months when she was baptised.

Does that cause a problem?

I think a few of us have experienced senior moments on this thread. Hope that Georgina Elizabeth Elwain McDonald is the right person.

Are you alright with that Old Geezer?

Hi MadMeg

I understand now

everything is as you have said, Geogina was born in London City 1858 But I didnt know she was baptised in India, perhaps they didnt want to baptise her in London in case the first (and legal ?) wife found him

The "McDonalds" went on to have Alfred Henry and Martha, parents entered entered as Alfred and Ann McDonald, alias McElwain, a third child, Ann, parents entered as William and Ann McDonald "or" McElwain, I found them in records but there was another two sons born in India, Joseph and my Grandfather William, someone else found them (Victor)

The thing that is giving me "stress" is Pre-1853 as I have said earlier

Thank you for the Georgina info on her Baptism

had a look at that marriage in St Peter's Liverpool today

married by banns 14 Jan 1828

John McElwain (joiner) and Aungier - the forename looked more like Mary than Martha - will check again. The computers were down today so could not get to your thread to check what you had

MacTheOldGeezer Report 22 Jan 2010 23:44

John McElwain was the name of my Great Great Grandfather

My Great Grandfather was born, or so he says in the 1881 census in Liverpool

Liverpool is not far from Manchester where a John and Martha MacElwain baptised a William

I got the Liverpool Marriage from the IGI and her name was Martha, the Baptism at Manchester Cathedral also came from the IGI but there was a space between Mac and Elwain

The nearest I have been able to get is that my Great Grandfather's second daughter was named Martha which fits in with Scottish tradition where the second Daughter was usually named after the Grandmother

the second son was named after his father Alfred

First Son First Marriage was William same name as the Son of John in Manchester

sorry I was looking at the wrong bit of my notes (I was also looking up another John & a Mary)

the IGI is correct - the actual parish registers say John McElwain to Martha Aungier and John was a joiner

Manchester Cathedral 9th Jan 1831

William s of John, gardener, and Martha McElwain of Manchester

MacTheOldGeezer

MacTheOldGeezer Report 30 Jan 2010 20:00

Oh Boy !!

I hadn't heard he was a Gardener before

John who married Martha Aungier in Liverpool 1828 was down as a Joiner when they got married

Alfred's Father was entered as a Gardener in his first Marriage in 1853
And a Botanist in the second in 1857

It might be getting closer to John being my Great Great Grandfather
