Sue of Oz,
I also thought Annie May could have been Doris when I checked the 1911 census, but I found Doris on a passenger list leaving London to India in 1954 and she was shown as 49yrs. she was then married to Capt. John H. S. Stewart, they also had a daughter with them Patrcia Elizabeth Pegeen Stewart who was 17yrs.who I have also had difficulty finding my last trace was they were still in India in 1960 but don't know if they left for the U.K. there is a possibility they may have gone to Australia, is there any way to find out, every were I look I seem to hit a brick wall.

Welcome back Alan! Please note that people will now recommence their searches to assist you, so do stay in touch.

Just to save you a bit of time in replying, most of us aren't worried about getting a "personal" reply to our bits, you can put them all on one reply and we will fight amongst ourselves!

The marriage in Holborn is a good starting point to find her father. And the birth in Dartford, Kent is a lot closer than Wales, albeit a bit late.

So Patricia Wotsit was born in Barton. Dockyards and industry abound there, so ties in with her father being a Captain of something, possibly Merchant Navy.

I would still ask you please to explain what research has led you to Bristol/Wales.

Margaret

The reason my searches are in Wales is that Isaac John Cooper 4yrs. son of Isaac and Pricilla on the 1911 census is my wives father and my wife was born in Wales. Also Doris,'s husband Capt. John H.S. Stewart worked for the Bombay Port Trust and retired head of the Marine Department as Deputy Conservator on the 9th Feb. 1960. that's when I have come to a brick wall, I found this out through passenger lists leaving U.K also contacted the Mumbai Port Trust. I have tried contacting the India Times newspaper but they never replied, also the India Embassy, the Daily Mail and varies other sites but were unable to help. The main reason in my research is trying to find John and Doris's daughter Patricia Elizabeth Pegeen Stewart who would now be 72yrs and would hope she is still alive, she also went to India with her parents, if anyone can help me in finding her, my wives cousin I would be most grateful. I have also sent for Doris's marriage certificate.

Sorry, I though that Doris Marie Cooper was the focus of this email. It seems not. Doris Marie appears to be the mother of Patricia Elizabeth Peegan Stewart. who returned to the UK in 1848, following a spell in India.

Several marriages of a Patricia Stewart. I can't identify a particular one.

Madmeg

Madmeg Report 24 Nov 2009 18:29

Oops, dates a bit muddled. Doris Marie and Priscilla COME to England in 1948 and RETURN to India in 1954.

I am assuming, Alan, that you know this Doris to be your wife's aunt and the details your wife has about Captain Stewart are from personal knowledge? Is your wife certain that Doris was Isaac John's sister? Might she have been a cousin?

Alan

Alan Report 24 Nov 2009 19:16

Thanks Choccy, it is Patricia and Doris, how did you find passengers coming into the U.K I have only found them going out to India which was, Doris and Patricia leaving London to Bombay 9th Dec. 1938.
John, Doris and Patricia leaving London to Bombay 2nd Dec. 1946.
John, Doris and Patricia leaving London to Bombay 12th Jan. 1950.
John, Doris and Patricia leaving London to Bombay 24th Aug. 1954.
Is it possible to find them leaving India from 1960 onwards?

Alan

Alan Report 24 Nov 2009 19:46

I still would like to find out about Doris, but you are correct, finding Patricia is the one my wife would love to find and hoping she is still alive, I have tried to find Patricia before but didn't get any replies so I decided to use Doris and see if it came up with some leads.
Doris is my wife's Aunt and she also knew about Doris's marriage to Capt. J. Stewart, Doris was always known as Isaac's half sister, but unfortunately there is no one to confirm as my wife's parents and all that generation have pass away. As to Doris been a cousin I doubt it, all the cards/letters Doris sent home she reffered to Priscilla Cooper as her mother.

Madmeg

Madmeg Report 24 Nov 2009 20:25

This tale makes me reconsider whether she is Annie May Baldwin, who was a half-sister to Isaac, although she is also 5 years older than we would like. However, when you initially confirmed to me the details of her marriage certificate, you didn't have those, as you have only recently said that you have sent for that certificate.

Perhaps as she was marrying a well-respected man she decided to invent a name with a father.

I wonder what evidence had to be produced to get a passport back in the 1930s and 1940s?
