Wellibobs...Have found ref to an "RC Chapel Ince Hall. Billinge" there were some Calons/Callans/ 1792/1794...but cannot find a Margaret....

Hello all,
Just to update you a little, I have finally found a death certificate for Margaret Callon( Its about the only thing I have found for her so far) and I now Know that she was formerly a handloom cotton drawer. The informant is her son Joseph Callon of sims lane end, which ties in with his home address on the 1861 census. But (there is always one it seems!) His mother's place of death was School Lane Ashton in Makerfield, does anyone know where that would be in relation to sims lane end ?...... I have tried address search on FMP but no results.... it might not seem important, but I want to try to understand the family as much as I can, I don't really want to just collect names on a tree, if you know what I mean. I would be most grateful for any help you can give. Many thanks. M.

HI Wellybobs. Sims Lane End and School Lane are linked by Garswood Road and are not very far apart.

The nearest main road is the B5207 (Billinge Road) and Sims Lane End is at the junction of Billinge Road and Garswood Road.

School Lane is further down just off Garswood Road.

How refreshing to hear that someone wants to understand more of the family and their lives and not just collect names. It can be fascinating.

As an example I looked at a newspaper report of an inquest (in Lancs) and in the next column it was reporting on the progress of the American Civil War! Is there any time in history when there was not a war being reported on????

Hi, thanks for the offer Lancashireann, I find this all amazing, especially when you read reports, census etc, I find it really strange to try to relate what was happening with my family and what was happening around the world..... for example my husbands grandfather was born in 1881 and that was the time of the Gunfight at OK Corral at tombstone Arizona!! (we only know the date of that cos my hubby is a bit of a western fan!!) A far cry from a back to back house in Wigan.
But I also find it rather sad as the mortality rate for children was so high
and some of the children were working in pits and mills from 10/12 years old, and when I look at two of our grandsons who are that age it makes you think how things have changed. So I aim to keep looking and finding out as much I can about our history. thanks once again. M
