hi my great grandmother edith died on 4 march 1986. born in 1910 i believe. area of croyden? i do not know her surname but her maiden name is hickmott. i'm not sure if she married because her children were illigitimate. how could i find out and where?

How do you know her date of death? Do you have some sort of record of this - a gravestone picture, death cert etc?

Just curious about knowing that info but not her surname - sorry.

it was in a letter sent to my mother from her aunt. telling us of her death, but many years later. we know her maiden name through birth certificates

deaths after 1969 give dates of birth. Have you looked for her under Hickmott or do you think she could have married later after her children were born?

her illigitimate children wer born in 1931 and 1936 so she did not marry before then as they took her maiden name as thier surname.

i cant search on free bmb as thier records only go up to 1984.

I have given you the registration for her birth.

thanks joy, i'm trying to find out if she has got married as i can't find a death for edith hickmott. i would like to know a death as then i can see what area she lived in. i'm very intrested to see if she ever married or even if she went on to have more children after my grandad her son was put in care.

on Ancestry the death indexes from 1984 are transcribed.If you search for edith(without the surname) and add the date of birth and death you can then search through the results to find the one which fits.

its come up with a good result of edith freeman who died in braintree essex right near where my aunt lives however i can't find a marrage for an edith hickmott and a freeman to confirm it,gutted just as i think i've solved it i'm back to the start again!

oh think i may have done it . opinions please.

marrage record for essex in 1961 of edith hickmott marrying john w freeman. thier is a death record of an edith freeman in march 1986 in braintree, where family live now.

As you know her maiden name through birth certificates, I take it you know her fathers name. You could order that marriage certificate using her fathers name as a checking point. If it's not the right one it will only have cost you £3 not £7.

edith was also illigitimate. so thier would be no farther on marrage cert. any other tips? do marrage certs only cost £3 from the gro?

No the certificates are £7, but if you aren't sure you have the correct one, you can add other info to use as a checking point. If the certificate is not the right one GRO charge £3 for the search.

Hi Victoria,

You could send for the death certificate for Edith Freeman using the date of death you have for your Edith as a checking point (that is if you can use a date for a checking point). If the dates right you will get the certificate, if it's not you will only be charged £3 for the search.

She is with the Woolgar family in 1911, maybe you know the connection Victoria. It looks like William, his wife Florence and their two children Edna and Leslie but you would need to pay to see the relationship.
