Hmmm, tricky. Do you know of this site - http://www.workhouses.org.uk/ - it's got a lot of information about workhouses in general. Or if you google "milton union workhouse" there are hundreds of references. hope I'm not telling you something you know already.

there is no record of the parents in the workhouse

all listed as being born in newington kent

Was it just he and his siblings admitted to the workhouse - i.e. not either of his parents? If so, that would indicate they may have been orphans. Is it possible in that in such circumstances they could have been given a new surname by the authorities? (I've no evidence for such a practice but it seems the sort of thing well-meaning but misguided "guardians of the poor" might have done.)

I have been trying for about two years to find a birth record for my gt gfather.i know when and were he married and when he died also that he and 5 siblings were in milton union workhouse in 1881 ( they were admitted dec 1881) but heres the puzzle i cant find any of these people on any other census or indeed any births for any of them, i can understand one slipping through the net but 6 siblings any help appreciated
