I have been trying to trace my grandmother Clarissa for 4yrs,she told a few white lies along the way,so have not been able to get past 1901 census and her marriage plus the birth of my uncle all in the same year!! She was in the workhouse in Derby on the 1901 census working as a laundry maid in a school, gave her name as Clarissa E. Fau;lkner as 26yrs. In August 1901 she married my grandfather and gave her age as 23yrs ,my uncle was born the same year!! On all the paperwork she said her father was William Faulkner (Deceased) Farmer. Now if her death cert is correct she would have been born in 1872. I have only been able to find one possible but she was born Clara Faulkner, father was a farmer but by 1901 he was deceased.
But this Clara is on the 1901 census in a different area. I know you are all busy with your own research but if anyone can be of any help that would be great.
Many thanks
Jan

Yes, theoretically it is possible for someone to be on the same census in two different areas. Up to 1901 census details were recorded by enumerators not the householder and obviously it took time, maybe one or two weeks, and householders may not have understood that the information applied to one particular night so gave details of everyone who normally lived in the house - and if one person was away they might have been recorded where they were staying as well. And conversely some people may have been missed off a census altogether because two householders each thought the other would list a particular person.
But just because a particular name crops up in two different places on the same census doesn't mean that it is the same person, particularly if the name is fairly common.

It is possible.
I have a female relation who wasa monthly nurse she is recorded in the 1881 census by the head of house in the houshold of the new mum AND again by her daughter at the family home. Anyones guess where she was on census night

My grandfather is on the 1911 census twice, at his father’s house and at home with his wife and son.

They lived about a mile from each other.

PM from Janet.

Thanks for you reply, she said she was born in Barton & Walton.Derbyshire.But this was a railway station, barton is now an industrial estate and have cheched the one grave yard in Walton for Faulkners but found none.I can remember my mother telling me she was from Lancashire,so how would she end up in Derbyshire in a workhouse in 1901.?Any help would be wonderful, she was a special lady to me. Again many thanks did not know I could get help on this site.

Have now found her in 1901.

Thanks All for taking the time to help me,my problem is I cant trace my grandmother before 1901.I have tried all different spellings, and have only come up with one which I found on the 1901 census, but she was a Clara Martha Faulkner born 1875.Her father was William and he was a farmer,by 1901 his wife Mary was a widow. But when I checked the 1901 census she was living with family in Chorlton Cum Hardy,,Lancashire.
Perhaps my lovely grandmother did not want to be found.I know all about her after 1901 but not before.I will try anything, any idea's.
Pleased I visited this site some great people on it.

I don't think that Clara Martha and your Clarissa are the same person as according to her marriage she was Clarissa Ellen.

As her age varies on the 1901 and 1911 it's difficult to know exactly when she was born.

One reason for not finding her in earlier years could be that her father died when she was young and mother remarried and she could be on census under step fathers name.

But having said that I haven't found a Clarissa born in Derbyshire as yet.

Sorry it has taken a while to reply, not very good with computers. You kindly answered my question about someone being on two census.I grew up with my grandmother, all the family called her Clarissa so am sure it was her first name. All I have is 1901 cenus when she was in the Union workhouse Derby .Clarissa E.Faulkner single age 26yrs laundress min school.Born Barton & Walton.Derbyshire. Wedding cert dated 31st August 1901. Clarissa Ellen Faulkner age 23yrs married Thomas Parker (my grandfather) profession launderess.Father William Faulkner.(deceased) Farmer. She died in 1964 aged 92 , if the age is correct. On my mothers birth cert my grandmother has her name as Clarissa Elizabeth, so not even sure about her middle name. Is it possible to just use the first name and approx age, I know it will take time but it is important to me, I know she had to get married, and if she has any distant family I want them to know what she was like. If you know of a site I could try with the little information I have I would be very grateful.
Kind Regards

Who were the witnesses when Clarissa married?
Perhaps the names will help us to link her to a family in the census.

It's possible that she was baptised/registered as Clara but called herself Clarissa when she married.

I have a record of someone registered as Ellen - by the time she married she was calling herself Helena.

On her wedding cert she gave her address as Pelham Street Derby. This was the home of Arthur Berrill,my grandparents witness.I found out his wife was Mercy and they had two childrenFlorence and Percy.I also found out that my grandparents had two good friends George and Ada Thompson, they lived at 55 Brunswick Street Derby,my mother Rosa Parker was born at this address.I know that in 1906 my grandparents lived at 180 Shaftesbury Crescent Derby. All my grandparents children were born in Derby.Sorry thats as much as I know,I have even put a "trying to find " in a Derby newspaper in the hope I might get a lead,no luck. Thanks for taking the time to help.

Also did Clarissa register her daughter's birth?
