Typical, I ask a question where yes or no would have sufficed and what do I get?

Its a wonder someone hasn't posted copies of all the census returns from the year dot com to the present date, including colour images of birth and death certificates of famous Ozi creatures.

As far as the other thread is concerned, very well meaning and many of us, no doubt, agree with the general sentimens, but you have to be very careful that this sort of thing doesn't become prescriptive with too many thou shalts and thou shalt nots.

The last thing we want to do is to put people off, especially new members, for fear that they may not follow the so called 'rules'

Ozi is definitely NOT a TLA. Just as NOT is not a TLA.

Ozi is a term of endearment for a hardworking family research helper who definitely spends 90% of her time at her computer poring over her Ancestry subscription, googling up obscure place names and finding totally unrelated people on censuses who live next door to somebody who may have known your 3x great-grandfather.

Now this endearing little Aussie is off to eat her dinner!! I'll be back after the Aussie Rules football game, because the Brisbane Lions are playing Collingwood and this is my 10% off.

Just had another look at "10 tips for newbies" and what started out as a tongue in cheek though slightly cynical look at the habits of posters on threads seems to have got rather serious with some folks taking offence from it.

But I've really laughed at some of the posts on THIS thread - we've obviously all got a great sense of humour whilst making some very good points about the etiquette of posting. Keep up the good work.

That sounds like me then, a Newby I am and proud of it.

Make sure you hijack all the threads and compete for longest post.((just kidding! Jonesey - found it very funny!)

Lose no opportunity to display how computer literate you are by typing as many obscure lines of gobbledegook as you can, then sit back and wait for the pleas for help in understanding it

Pretend you understand how familysearch works

Always cut and paste census to be the first one to find them.

Never bother to add the relationships of those in the household.

Never give occupations or addresses so the newbies have to ask again.

Always tell a newby they could find it themselves on freebmds if they tried harder
Never explain what and where the IGI is

8. Wasting valuable time on big discussions on how newbies behave or rather "don't behave" when they could be doing something more constructive like finding your missing relative John Smith from London or Patrick Murphy from Ireland ;)

7. When you paste a census report, make sure you never delete anything so the reader has to plough through half a page of meaningless drivel to read 2 names.

5. Once information asked for is found please run with it and near complete their tree for them.

6. Never tell a newbie where the information was found so that they live in wonder forever
