You can search like that on FreeBMD if he was born before about 1935 as that is as far as their records go at present.
If you do I recommend that you do it quarter by quarter otherwise you will get just too many hits.

Hi - a few months ago I learned that my late father had been adopted. I have his exact date and place of birth and have searched and searched birth records in vain using 3 possible surnames that could have been used, i.e. the surname of his adopted parents, a middle name that could have been a surname and the maiden name of his adopted mother but to no avail. Is there any way of trying to trace someone just by using the date and place of birth? Many thanks for any suggestions.
