The Lennie Family James, Eliza and William Lennie
James Lennie was born in South Leith in 1816 or 1817. The family living together at the time of the 1851 census comprised: James Lennie Master Optician Aged 34 Eliza Lennie Wife Aged 33 William Son, Apprentice Optician Aged 13
Thank you to Norman Price, Nottingham, England for telling me more family details (below).
Norman wrote:
"James Lennie and Eliza are the parents of William Brown Lennie, my great great grandfather. His daughter, Violet Ade Lennie is my great grandmother. She married Fred Percy Jackson. William Lennie moved to Liverpool."
Norman Price, Nottingham, England: Message in EdinPhoto GuestBook: November 21, 2007 John, James and Joseph Lennie
James Lennie died in 1854. Around 1872, Eliza Lennie married optician James Taylor from Haywood, England. There were three stepsons: John Lennie James Lennie Joseph Lennie
John Lennie and probably at least one of his brothers had connections with the business. The business traded as J & J Lennie in the early 1900s. Joseph Lennie
Joseph Lennie became President of Edinburgh Photographic Society, 1900-01. E J Lennie / Jack Lennie
E J Lennie gave lectures on photographic filters to Edinburgh Photographic Society in 1938 and 1948. Jack Lennie headed the firm in 1959, the year that the company closed the photographic side of its business.
Thank you to Paul R Lennie for sending me the following message:
E J Lennie / Jack Lennie
"I think you will find that EJ Lennie and Jack Lennie were one and the same; he was my father.
He did close the business in 1959 and move to Rome, with his second wife, my mother, and died there in 1969."

Hi Guys,
it seems that i have a problem with this ancestor - as in i have obtained copies of what i think are his marriage and birth certs and they both have different fathers on them!!! his birth cert says Isaih Wood and his marriage cert says John Wood.
i am assuming that the Alfred Burton Wood IS my ancestor because his occupation on an original cert i have is the same - provision/wine merchant and he was born in Kettering - BUT - the only Afred Burton Wood that i can find, born in Kettering at the correct time, has Isaih Wood as his father. Isaih Wood's occupation was a tailor and i am told by a living relative that this branch of the family were originally tailors.
the family found on this thread has the correct children i.e. my great grandfather Albert Herbert is listed as his child on the census info
can anyone help me as to how i proceed from here?

Hi Christine,
I think that you may have answered my earlier on this thread - but maybe not. Not sure of what details you would like posted on the thread - please tell me if I have got this wrong and am not giving you the information you have asked for..
In short, I am almost positive that the Alfred Burton Wood of Ilkeston is my ancestor, simply because he is recorded on his daughter’s marriage cert as being a provision/wine merchant. A living relative has told me that the family were Nottingham based - and Ilkeston was then part of Nottinghamshire.
This is, I believe, my great great grandfather in the census - Alfred B Wood - and my great grandfather Albert Herbert Wood, his son.
http://www.ilkestonhistory.org.uk/familyhistory%20portraits%202.htm
Alfred Burton Wood He was born at Kettering, Northamptonshire on February 24th 1846, the son of John Wood, a Woollen Draper. He commenced business as a Provision Merchant in 1866 and was married in 1869 to Jane Taylor, the daughter of James Taylor, an Optician of Nottingham. [of course I thought that the website had got the father of Alfred wrong!!!]
1891 Address: 49, Bath Street, Ilkeston WOOD, Alfred B Head Married M 45 1846 Provision Merchant Kettering Northamptonshire VIEW WOOD, Jane Wife Married F 44 1847 Nottingham VIEW WOOD, Albert H Son Single M 20 1871 Shop man Ilkeston Derbyshire VIEW WOOD, Edith E Daughter Single F 19 1872 Ilkeston Derbyshire VIEW WOOD, Charles S Son Single M 16 1875 Provision Merchants Apprentice Ilkeston Derbyshire VIEW WOOD, Lily M Daughter Single F 14 1877 Scholar Ilkeston Derbyshire VIEW WOOD, Stephen R Son Single M 12 1879 Scholar Ilkeston Derbyshire VIEW WOOD, Jane Daughter Single F 10 1881 Scholar Ilkeston Derbyshire VIEW WOOD, Alfred B Son Single M 8 1883 Scholar Ilkeston Derbyshire VIEW WOOD, Arthur Son Single M 6 1885 Scholar Ilkeston Derbyshire VIEW WOOD, Florence Daughter Single F 3 1888 Scholar Ilkeston Derbyshire VIEW ROBERTS, Mary Servant Single F 18 1873 General Servant Nottingham
Below is, I believed, to be my great great great grandfather - but upon receiving copies of Alfred Burton Wood’s marriage cert to Jane, his father is recorded as John Wood. I was told by the same living relative that this branch of the family were originally tailors - being Jewish. 1851 Alfred Wood Isaiah, Rachael abt 1846 Norths, Kettering Son Kettering, Northamptonshire View Record Alice Wood Isaiah, Rachael abt 1844 Norths, Kettering Daughter Kettering, Northamptonshire View Record Isaiah Wood Rachael abt 1812 Norths, Kettering Head Kettering, Northamptonshire View Record Rachael Wood Isaiah abt 1810 Norths, Kettering Wife Kettering, Northamptonshire View Record Rhoda Wood Isaiah, Rachael abt 1841 Norths, Kettering Daughter Kettering, Northamptonshire View Record Stephen Wood Isaiah, Rachael abt 1840 Norths, Geddington Son Kettering, Northamptonshire
I have received the birth cert for this Alfred Burton Wood and, of course, it confirms that his father was Isaiah.
I am now so confused - how do I go about finding out who his father is?
Thanks for your help - sorry I wasnt around when you replied!

I want you to copy out exactly what is recorded on the certificates and then I will have another look.
Sometimes people swapped middle and forenames so all is not lost. we need to read everything again .

OK I have looked at the other census returns that we have found and the family group is right for each census.
These two give us place of birth for Alfred and Jane. as Kettering and Nottingham respectively. And we have ages.
This also fitss with what we know
1881 Address: 36, Market St, Ilkeston (Derby) WOOD, Alfred Burton Head Married M 35 1846 Provision Dealer Kettering Northamptonshire WOOD, Jane Wife Married F 34 1847 Nottingham WOOD, Albert Herbert Son Single M 10 1871 Scholar Ilkeston Derbyshire WOOD, Edith Ellen Daughter Single F 9 1872 Scholar Ilkeston Derbyshire WOOD, Charles Stanley Son Single M 6 1875 Scholar Ilkeston Derbyshire WOOD, Lilly May Daughter Single F 5 1876 Scholar Ilkeston Derbyshire WOOD, Stephen Richardson Son Single M 2 1879 Ilkeston Derbyshire WOOD, Jane Taylor Daughter Single F 0 1881 Ilkeston Derbyshire HEATHCOTE, John Boarder Single M 17 1864 Provision Dealer Appr Cropwell Bishop BENNETT, Susan Servant Single F 15 1866 Domestic Serv Ilkeston Derbyshire MARSHALL, Lizzey Servant Single F 14 1867 Nurse Girl Kegworth Leicestershire
Middle names are quite informative
notice WOOD, Stephen Richardson Son Single M 2 1879 Ilkeston Derbyshire
and compare
marriage Rachel Richardson 1838 Kettering Isaiah Wood
Good clue I think.
Now notice WOOD, Jane Taylor Daughter Single F 0 1881 Ilkeston Derbyshire
I think we have another clue.

Hi Christine,
the certs i have received copies of are the birth cert for Kettering page 292 and the marriage cert 7b 237
1891 Address: 49, Bath Street, Ilkeston WOOD, Alfred B Head Married M 45 1846 Provision Merchant Kettering Northamptonshire VIEW WOOD, Jane Wife Married F 44 1847 Nottingham VIEW WOOD, Albert H Son Single M 20 1871 Shop man Ilkeston Derbyshire VIEW WOOD, Edith E Daughter Single F 19 1872 Ilkeston Derbyshire VIEW WOOD, Charles S Son Single M 16 1875 Provision Merchants Apprentice Ilkeston Derbyshire VIEW WOOD, Lily M Daughter Single F 14 1877 Scholar Ilkeston Derbyshire VIEW WOOD, Stephen R Son Single M 12 1879 Scholar Ilkeston Derbyshire VIEW WOOD, Jane Daughter Single F 10 1881 Scholar Ilkeston Derbyshire VIEW WOOD, Alfred B Son Single M 8 1883 Scholar Ilkeston Derbyshire VIEW WOOD, Arthur Son Single M 6 1885 Scholar Ilkeston Derbyshire VIEW WOOD, Florence Daughter Single F 3 1888 Scholar Ilkeston Derbyshire VIEW ROBERTS, Mary Servant Single F 18 1873 General Servant Nottingham
this is the census i feel sure of - simply because he has a son Albert H [Herbert] which was my great grandfather's name.
I have emailed the people who have constructed the website where Alfred Burton's name is mentioned and said that i think they are wrong and that his father's name is Isaiah - but to date have received no reply!
I am, however, going next Thursday, to the local library which holds documents etc of Ilkeston and am hoping that the library can give me info regarding what my g.grandfather was 'prominant' for in this town.
My search of addresses given in censuses have given little fruit to my search - as they addresses have either been demolished or changed.
one address in 1881 census[36 market st] is now a factory with no mention of its previous purpose or names.
another address in 1891 census is now a nationwide building society on what was a busy high street for shops and businesses and
the last address i have in the 1910 census is a one up-one down attached to the Montague Burton [Burtons menswear] building called 'Burton House'.
i am at a loss - something is amiss here and i cannot fathom out what!!!

so - you are thinking that maybe he has changed his father's name from Isaiah to John? [maybe to fit in?]
