it just seemed a bit too much of a coincidence .

........... her name could easily have been mis-spelled by the Head of the house, and she could have taken a few years off her age in order to get a job

just thoughts for you to consider

................. especially as she apparently is not present in the Workhouse after several of us (including me) have searched the records.

I tried the workhouse records for Kate, Franc*, and no name in case she was in there as initials only or under no name at all.

Thank you very much Netty

Hi Ann, Searched, page by page, 1901 Worcester General Infirmary & worcester Union Workhouse, nothing showing for Kate Francis/Frances or Dyer i'm afraid.

Sylvia - I don't really think it could be our Kate. We know she was baptised in 1853 (IGI). On her death certificate she was 52 in 1904. Have looked on IGI and there don't appear to be any Francise or Francese. Thank you for taking the time to look for me.

She and her daughter Dorothy haven't been easy to unravel, although I have a fair bit on Dorothy. It's the father of Dorothy's daughter (my husband's mother) who's going to be the real brickwall as we only have a surname and nothing else at all.

Hi Sylvia

I know a lot about Kate now, after a lot of searching. I am trying to find information about her stay in the Union Workhouse in Worcester which could have been from about 1890 until her death in 1904. Worcester Records Office tell me records from that time have not survived but I wondered if she might be listed on the 1901 census in the workhouse.
Helen gave me the details for Ancestry but unfortunately I do not have a subscription and I had stupidly given kate's maiden name when I asked for help originally.

Kate was born Kate Dyer in 1853 in Worcester to George and Mary Dyer, siblings George, Alice, Mary, Alfred, Annie and William. She married John Francis but I have been unable to find out when. She had a daughter, Dorothy Francis (my husband's grandmother) in c 1890 also in Worcester. Dorothy is shown living with her grandparents in 1891 and 1901 census. Kate died in the Union Workhouse in 1904 and at that time was shown as a widow.

Thanks

Many thanks Helen. I emailed Worcester Records Office yesterday and they have today told me that although they have many administrative records for the Workhouse they do not have any for the period 1890 to 1904 which is when we think Kate was in there. She died in there in 1904 and was not around in the 1891 census when her daughter was a year old, or the 1901 when she was 11.

Helen, I'm so sorry! It has just dawned on me that Kate was by then a Francis. She married John Francis but we cannot find out when. Have to go again now but will be back later - if you could bear to look again. Thanks

I don't have a subscription to Ancestry - I did try their 14 day free trial and found it very good but I had just renewed my Genes sub so couldn't really justify the extra cost.

Have had a scan through the 13 pages and can't find a Kate or Katherine with a surname that looks anything like Dyer.

The Worcester Union workhouse in Worcester was at Tallow Hill, it later became Shrub Hill Maternity Hospital.

Records relating to the workhouse are held by Worcester Record Office, County Hall, Spetchley Road, Worcester. WR5 2NP

They may be able to help you with more information.

This is the Ancestry ref for the Worcester Union Workhouse in the 1901 census, Class: RG13; Piece: 2782; Folio: 108; Page: 10.
I just put in "worcester union" in keywords at bottom of search.

No Kate Dyer, Kate with any surname or Dyer with any first name showing on search.

There are 13 pages of names to search through, so haven't done this, if you don't have access to the image on ancestry let me know and when I get a chance I'll have a look for you.

Is anyone able to access the residents of the Union Workhouse in Worcester for 1901. I am looking for Kate Dyer who died there in 1904. Ditto 1891 as I think she may have been resident then. Thanks
Ann

Will have to go out shortly so if anyone replies please understand if I don't get back to you for a while.
