All I have to say is -- that was Julie who spotted that Alice Wood death! I merely applauded her. ;)

It does look like I thought, though -- an informal 'adoption', with an altered birth cert to go with.

As Angela says - was there a family connection? And I do agree it helps to hear similar stories -- confirmation that such things did indeed happen.

There's no Alice Quan* born 1886-1892 in the 1911 census who matches.

I'm thinking Quantick was her birth surname and she was married by 1911.

So she possibly was this one:

Marriages Mar 1906
Adams James Wandsworth 1d 789
Hagley Thomas Edmund Wandsworth 1d 789
> Quantick Alice May Wandsworth 1d 789
Saunders Florence Wandsworth 1d 789

But there are no Adams-Quantick or Hagley-Quantick births, and I can't spot that Alice in the 1911 as either.

But she definitely matches the birth noted earlier:

Births Mar 1889
Quantice Alice Wandsworth 1d 771

making her this one in Battersea in 1901:

William J Quantick 33
Alice Quantick 32 - Alice Tracey
Tracey Quantick 14
Alice M Quantick 12 - born Putney
William J Quantick 4
Edwin J Quantick 1
Frederick C Quantick 1

The household is in Wandsworth in 1911, but she's not with it.

I had to crash my Firefox and I think this got lost - I was wondering whether Lily Rooke might have come into it as the registrar who heard about John Wood's difficult circumstances when he registered Alice's death, and suggested her Rooke relations as being a couple who wanted a child ...

Jooleh Report 4 May 2009 00:52

Wow what a journey! Evie I'm with you. There are only two marriages for Quantick in Wandsworth:

Marriages Mar 1906 (>99%)
Quantick Alice May Wandsworth 1d 789

Marriages Sep 1906 (>99%)
QUANTICK Tracey Wandsworth 1d 1424

Brother and sister from the census'?

So she maried Adams or Hagley as mentioned earlier -but then became Wood?

Janet there are pension records for Tracey Quantick on Ancestry which may glean information re family?

(my PC playing up so having difficulty looking at the images)

As for Lily - yes she must be implicated! I knew nothing about registration until I started researching my family. Why didn't they just change the name and leave all the other details? *Someone* knew that the detail could be searched on and the truth be found out.......?

Julie :)

Jooleh

Jooleh Report 4 May 2009 01:05

Yes!!
Am accessing those pension records bit by bit...........Tracey married whilst in service to Lizzie Lane....witnesses Alice and Thomas Hagley!

There ya go, Jock! The oldies are easier, of course. Even when they're not easy. ;) Very glad to see a newbie perusing the boards! (Even if I have to keep disclaiming credit for one of those old-time team efforts -- it's just that I chewed Jock out a while back for multiple threads yada yada ;) ...)

Sorry got carried away - should have put WW pension records.
Evie when you resurrect will you come back here first please my head is too full of Hagley records!

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 4 May 2009 22:58

BOY,
aren,t we the poular one then Evie?

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 4 May 2009 23:17

I dunno, Viv ... poular? Is that a nice thing to be??

I'm actually more guilty of kibitzing in this thread than of producing anything productive, I think. For some reason I just keep getting credit where it isn't due every time I clap for Julie!

This is our Thomas Edmund Hagley:

Births Mar 1873
HAGLEY Thomas Edmund Exeter 5b 118

Devon is the source of most things Quantick too, of course.

Could this be him in 1911 then?

HAGLEY THOMAS 1872 39 Wandsworth London
HAGLEY SIDNEY 1906 5 Wandsworth London

-- the only Hagleys in the household.

Births Mar 1906
Hagley Sidney Wandsworth 1d 670

Somebody at GR has a Sidney Hagley born "1902 Devon?" in their tree. There was no Sidney Hagley born 1900-1905. ??

He also has Thomas Hagley 1872 Totnes.

... but then, he may also have every Hagley ever born in his tree ...

Deaths Sep 1932
Hagley Thomas E 56 Battersea 1d 321

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 4 May 2009 23:42

There's no Hagley+ Brayley marriage 1900 onward.

Births Dec 1912
Hagley Cleveland G Brayley Lambeth 1d 867

Deaths Mar 1981
Hagley Cleveland Graham Weston 22 1613

Births Sep 1915
Hagley Hilda M Brayley Wandsworth 1d 962

The person who has the other Hagleys mentioned above in his tree also has Hilda.

This Brayley in 1911 seems to be unmarried - no other Brayleys in her household.

BRAYLEY EDITH 1881 30 Wandsworth London

None of this is actually relevant. Any children of Thomas Hagley would not be related to a child of Alice May Quantick Hagley 'Wood', other than by the fact that the father of one was once married to the mother of the other -- except for Sidney Hagley, who would seem to be a half-brother of Dolly, having the same mother.

I am going to bed!

Jooleh

Jooleh Report 4 May 2009 23:59

Hagleys aside for a mo - there is a list of Tracey Quantick's children on the WW pension records- so it may be possible to work forwards and find living relatives who might know *a story* ?

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 5 May 2009 00:43

That's what I was getting at, on the other side. ;)

Sidney Hagley would have been 15ish when Dolly was born. Would he have had any contact with his mother, Alice Quantick? for instance.

Janet 693215

Janet 693215 Report 5 May 2009 08:39

I started replying to this last night but neglected the submit button. (OH dragged me away from lappy. I was kicking and screaming but it didn't stop him :-))So I guess I'll submit now but it looks like your all going the same way as me!

I've been looking at Ernest Rookes sisters to see who they all married in case they married a Wood but they didn't. Hadn't thought of looking for Tracey's military records.

I had tried to find Hagley on the 1911 to see if Alice was with him but she isn't, only a son Sidney aged 5. So she was away from home or she'd left him. Off to look at Tracey's records on ancestry to see if I can get any clues and see when he married and also look for a death of Thomas.

Of course as John Henry Wood (who annoyingly seeems to be Henry John on the 1911) registered the birth of his child but when asked mothers maiden name did exactly that omitting the Hagley as a former name.

So it now looks like she ran off with the greengrocer, well a girls gotta get her fruit where she finds it. It's sad if she abandoned Sidney though

Janet 693215

Janet 693215 Report 5 May 2009 09:06

Thank you Julie. Credit where credits due. My problem is I skim read, extract the data then forget who contributed it!

So Sidney was born some time before the marriage and Thomas was 17 years older than Alice. Hmm I wonder what happened there? Was it a tardy marriage, did Alice marry to give her child a father, or had Thomas been left holding the baby and marrry Alice to give Sidney a Mother?

I thought my lot were difficult!

Janet 693215

Janet 693215 Report 5 May 2009 09:38

Evie, what year is that death for Sidney? I can't find it.

Thanks

Janet 693215 Report 5 May 2009 10:56

Oh I guess I could ask for myself as your all such good detectives, if anyone stumbles over Selina Jane Mitchell formerly Tocqueville nee Shackleton born 1856 Southampton on the 1911 I'll give them a cream cake. She should be in hackney, shoreditch london area but I can't find her. (or her son my grandfather but he's a fly by night so no suprise he's disappeared)
