in 1942 johndevlin is aged 36 making his birth about 1906 i have his army number and his fathers name is john devlin (deceased)

If you have your mother's marriage certificate to John Devlin in 1942, does it give an age for him? It's just that I notice they married in Sunderland and there is a death for a John Devlin in 1991 in Sunderland where it gives a birth year of 1902. Just wondered if this could be the same Mr. Devlin. Thought that if it was a possibility then it might be worth getting the death certificate to see who registered the death. If it was a family member then they may have information that could help you - although it could be tricky contacting them because of the situation.

The way her name is recorded would lead me to believe that her name was actually Devlin but was calling herself Nicholson and her maiden name was Lister.

Because of this I doubt you will find a marriage for your mother and Mr. Nicholson. If Mr. Devlin had died and she had married Mr. Nicholson, it would have said Iris Nicholson, LATE Devlin, formerly Lister. I still don't know why she didn't name him as your father though unless it was because she didn't want to do this knowing that she was actually still married to her husband.

In that case it seems strange that he wasn't named as your father. How was your mother's name described on the certificate - was she down as (first name) Nicholson, formerly (maiden name), or was her previous married name mentioned?

UPDATE - think I found your birth reference and it was her maiden name that was mentioned. Can see no reason for him not to be named as your father unless he really wasn't.

yes got them on elec roll 51/52/53
yes she was useing the name nicholson
yes i was born in 1955
my mom did get married in 1942 i have looked for a death cert for her 1sy hubby not got 1
so she could have still been married to him

We were typing at the same time. You say your mom told you he was your father. I don't want to offend you or your mom, but sometimes people say what they think we want to hear. Perhaps it wasn't true.

I was just about to suggest the same as Ozibird. You say they were living together in 1953 (was she using his name then?) You also mention 1955 - is that when you were born?

I think that if they had been living together when you were born and she was using his name then she would have named him on the birth certificate if he was your father.

Have you found them living together on the electoral roll after you were born? If no then I think there is a good possibility that he was not the father.

Did she report the death? If yes was any relationship/description given on the certificate re informant as there usually is. I have a death cert for a couple who were never married but lived together and she is quoted as being friend of the deceased?

So if she's living with him as his wife but he's not named on your cert, have you thought of the possibilty he's not your father?
