Great to see you're still on the case Paula.

So Robert may still have been alive in 1874 as per Mary's marriage certificate and deceased by 1880 as per Richard's marriage certificate. Can't see him yet in 1871.

Robert gives HIS father's name as Robert on his marriage certificate but I do wonder about the possible connection with William Ewins so here's an entry from the LMA -tuck it away for future reference in case anything new comes to light!

This means that her father..Robert Ewins,basketmaker(husband of Julia Ewins nee Fitzgerald)... was probably still alive in 1874.If you recall,the only place I ever located him was on the 1849 marriage to Julia and the 1851 census in Parker Street.Still no-one in 1861 and by 1871 Julia was living with Mr Kenedy in Barnet.

HMMMMMMMMMM...so they had Mary Ann THEN got married......perhaps they had to move away to do that????..even though it says they are married in 1871 it looks like they got married later,in 1874(I think it was)...

Perhaps THIS is where the profession of Harness maker fits into the picture...If you remember that is what was listed on the marriage certificate of Joseph John Michael Gabrael Ewins to Emma Singleton as the profession of his father....mind you,it also said his father was JOSEPH Ewins but it seems more likely that his father was ROBERT EWINS the BASKETMAKER.

Image definitely says Jones. Thomas & Mary born St. Giles London. (They say they are married) Thomas a Harness Maker which fits with the other census' 1881=Harness Stitcher

That is them on the 1881 census!!
I think that I had seen that census and hesitated when I noticed that their daughter,Mary Ann, was born in Kings Lynn in Norfolk before they were married.I think that I had intended to follow up on that and got sidetracked(we all know about that little problem!!).

I don't have access to the London Birth's database in my Ancestry subscription....is anyone able to check her birth?
(Mary Ann Jones b.19/3/1871 in Kings Lynn, Norfolk parents Mary S Jones-nee Ewins- and Thomas William Jones..father may be somone else possibly)-perhaps the entry will hold some answers.Thanks so much.

On the 1901 census Richard and Robert are both listed as 19 but there was a transcription error(I think) ,Robert was born in 1882 and Richard was born in 1884(that is just off the top of my head).

Girls...
I have no idea where Julia Ewins(nee Fitzgerald) and family were in 1861...I suspect that that is possibly around the time when her husband Robert may have died and her circumstances changed.Would she been likely to have been able to afford to travel to Ireland to visit family?

10 years later...in 1871...she was living in Barnet area with William Kenedy and was listed as Julia Kenedy although I don't think that they were married-she had her 2 son Richard and Robert living with her.I have still not worked out why she ended up in Barnet....did she have family connections or was it just a random relocation?

1871 is also the year that her daughter ,Mary S Jones(nee Ewins) would have had HER daughter,Mary Ann, who was born in Kings Lynn in Norfolk.I wonder why she was in Norfolk?

Hello Everyone,

I have FINALLY managed to put down some information to tell you about the Jones Family from Western Australia.
I have found a lot of information that I am still sorting through but I thought that everyone would like a brief update.

You may recall that I was looking for the sister of Joseph John Michael Gabriel Ewins who I thought was called Julia Ewins(junior)-she is the mother of Richard Jones who went to Western Australia.

It seems her name was actually Mary S Ewins and she was born in Bloomsbury around 1852(it seems likely that her birth was not registered either).I did find Julia Ewins and her husband Robert on the 1851 census with a daughter called Mary in my earlier searches-I couldn't find ANY of them in 1861 and I still haven't found Mary in 1871.She married Thomas William Jones in St Giles in March 1874-I have ordered the marriage certificate to try and confirm her father’s name.I have only found her on the 1891 and 1901 census ,so far, under her married name.

They had 5 children: Mary Ann b.1871 who married David Eastwell Dec 1890 in Poplar,Thomas William b.1880,Robert b.1882,Richard Jones(who went to WA)b.1884 and Eleanor(Nell)b.1889 who married James Gunn Dec 1910 in Poplar.

Richard Jones was born in Bow and at some stage went to Scotland.He joined the Royal Scots and in 1912 married Margaret Stewart Marshall in Edinburgh.In November 1927 he brought his family from Tranent,Scotland,by boat, as part of the Soldier Settlement Scheme .”Departed from Tilbury Docks aboard Orama.Arrived 13/12/1927”-this is listed on “The Welcome Wall” of WA under “Richard & Margaret Jones” .

They had a farm as part of the Soldier Settlement scheme but it was not tobacco…it was a potato farm in Bussellton.This was a very hard life and they had to abandon the farm during the depression.
Richard and Margaret had 5 sons and a daughter,so they have many descendants in Australia today.I am still sorting and gathering lots of information but thought you would like to see where my search has ended up.

Have you seen the new LMA records on Ancestry? Couldn't find any of your immediate Ewins but you might!

I was looking for William, son of William and Charlotte and as I scrolled through the parents names I found a child to them called Hannah, baptised in 1852. In the margin it says she was actually born 1844. Her father, William, is a basketmaker and they are living at Parker Street.

Hope you find some more!

I have a feeling that the subscription that I have with Ancestry does NOT allow me to access some of the recently added content.If I find anything that I cannot access I have been emailing details to my second cousin(in Scotland) who has a different type of subscription that allows him access.

Selena.....thanks for your message.I have been looking for Robert Ewins on the 1841 census but haven't really found a proper match.
From my research it seems that Finsbury and St Giles are definately in the same place...perhaps someone who knows more can explain.

I will have a bit of a look at this new information and see what comes up.
I will also post some information(soon) about Richard Jones and family who settled in Werstern Australia.

Also going on the theory that Wiliam Ewins is a relative I found the following but not sure how far Finsbury is to St Giles?

There have been some very exciting developments in the last few weeks!

In a nutshell...I located the funeral and death notices for Richard Jones(my relative who went to Western Australia and was a tobacco farmer) and his daughter-in-law(Freda May Jones nee Walker) who died in 1969 and 1972.When they arrived they contained lots of family tributes with many names to search for.

I got lucky.......I found some of the names on an online family tree and contacted the owner.She got back to me and confirmed that I had found the correct family!!
Amazing...I didn't hold out too much hope of tracking down a "Jones" family.

I am now in the process of exchanging e-mails and trying to sort out the various connections.I will post more details as I work them out.....as usual some of the family are going by different names!
