Hi Everyone, I spoke to my second cousin who is in Belfast who has the death certificate of Julia Ewins. It says she died on 11th November 1902 which fits in well with her burial date. I will post more information as it comes. Best wishes, Paula.

Hello Everyone, Just a bit of an update to let you know how my search is going.
I have recently discovered that some of my overseas relatives had come across this posting and have been following my search from afar! What a pleasant surprise!!! We are now in e-mail contact...Hi Michael!!(and Ronnie,Ursula,Ambrose and the rest)...and have begun to compare notes.
As my newly discovered second cousin was recently near Barnet he most kindly went to Bells Hill Cemetery in Barnet to try and locate the grave of Julia Ewins.Unfortunately he was unable to find it (she may not even have a gravestone) but is making enquiries about this.It is fantastic to have someone who is "closer to the action" on board! Thanks again Michael!
I have recently ordered a death certificate for a Robert Ewens who I am hopeful is the husband of Julia Ewins.
Deaths Mar 1864 (>99%) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- EWENS Robert Mile End 1c 510
I just have a feeling about this one. There is another Robert Ewens from the same area who was a firewood dealer. His first wife died and he remarried....I have followed that man through the census entries and he died much later so I am hopeful that this one may be Julia's husband.
I will keep you updated. Thank you all for your continued help and interest. Best wishes Paula X

Hi Paula, I took a look at a map and saw that Bells Hill cemetery is about 3 roads away from my Stepmother's house. I am due to visit her in the next couple of months so could take another look for you.
As you have the cemetery's grave reference, it would be worth asking if there is a cemetery map that will show you where this grave is.
I did this with a big cemetery in Lancashire and the map was very helpful.

Hello Everyone, The death certificate for Robert Ewens that I ordered has arrived:

Unfortunately it appears to be a 7 year old boy who died of scarlatina maligna(scarlet fever)...poor little soul. He is the son of the other Robert Ewens(firewood dealer) that I mentioned. This is the first certificate I have ordered that hasn't "belonged" so I have been lucky I guess! I will keep you all updated. Best wishes, Paula.

Hello Everyone, It has been a while since I have posted information...things are slowing down so it takes longer to find new information!
Thanks for your continued interest.
I decided to purchase a death certificate for a Robert Ewins-he died in 1856 so I know that he could not have been the father of Joseph Ewins but perhaps he was Julia's husband anyway. Name: Robert Ewins Year of Registration: 1856 Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep District: St Giles County: London, Middlesex Volume: 1b Page: (click to see others on page) They have left off the page number but I had a look and think it says Volume 1b page 225.
I received the certificate and here is the information: Registration District: St Giles in the Fields & St George Bloomsbury in the sub district of South St Giles in the Fields in the County of Middlesex Date: 25/8/1856 Where died: Workhouse Vinegar Yard Robert Ewins Male aged :77 years Cause of Death: Apoplexy-certified Occupation: Saddle tree maker Informant:H Fowler Master Workhouse St Giles When registered: 30/8/1856
This Robert Ewins would have been born in 1779-I have found him on the 1841 census: Name: Robert Ewings Age: 60 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1781 Gender: Male Where born: Middlesex, England Civil parish: St Pancras Hundred: Ossulstone (Holborn Division) County/Island: Middlesex Country: England Street Address: Occupation: View image Registration district: St Pancras Sub-registration district: Regents Park Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age Robert Ewings 60 I used his neighbour "Henry Turner" to find the same address in 1851 but Robert was not there: http://search.ancestry.com.au/iexec/?htx=view&r=5544&dbid=8860&iid=MDXHO107_1493_1493-1150&fn=Henry&ln=Turner&st=r&ssrc=&pid=2414786 Mind you...his occupation of "Saddle tree maker'" sounds more like the occupation of my Joseph Ewins father's from Joseph's marriage certificate(which was listed as Harness maker)! But as you may have read....I cannot find a record of Julia Fitzgerald having a husband called Joseph Ewins(harness maker)...just a Robert Ewins (basket maker)!
On the 1851 census I also noticed a family living at no. 44 Parker Street called Ewins(Julia and Robert Ewins were at 51 Parker Street). They are: William EWINS head marr. age 34 basketmaker b.Middlesex St. Giles Charlotte EWINS wife marr. age 27 coach lace maker b. Devon. They may have been relatives(same surname and profession as Robert). I thought that they could perhaps be related so I purchase their wedding certificate. Surname First name(s) District Vol Page

My second cousin also recently joined Ancestry and found a Robert Ewins in a Family Tree that seemed to match some of our details. He was a basketmaker and had a daughter Mary Ewins who married a Philip Morris: 31st May 1846 In the Parish Church of St.Anne,Westminster.Middx Philip Morris full age Bachelor Profession Chimney Sweep Living at Compton Street,London Father George Morris cutler Mary Ewins full age Spinster Living Mcardy Street,London Father Robert Ewins Basket Maker Witnesses George Morris and Amelia Harris Reverend Richard Sawyer officiating
I will add to this on the next posting.

HelloEveryone,
There have been some very exciting developments in the last few weeks!
In a nutshell...I located the funeral and death notices for Richard Jones(my relative who went to Western Australia and was a tobacco farmer) and his daughter-in-law(Freda May Jones nee Walker) who died in 1969 and 1972.When they arrived they contained lots of family tributes with many names to search for.
I got lucky.......I found some of the names on an online family tree and contacted the owner. She got back to me and confirmed that I had found the correct family!! Amazing...I didn't hold out too much hope of tracking down a "Jones" family.
I am now in the process of exchanging e-mails and trying to sort out the various connections.I will post more details as I work them out.....as usual some of the family are going by different names!
Thanks for all the help and support...things are going forward at last. Best wishes, Paula.

Hi Paula, I'm glad you are still persevering with this. Have you found Robert on the 1841, I went through the thread but couldn't see anything.
Also going on the theory that Wiliam Ewins is a relative I found the following but not sure how far Finsbury is to St Giles?
WILLIAM EWINGS Birth: 11 MAY 1827 Christening: 03 JUN 1827 Saint Luke Old Street, Finsbury, London, England Father: WILLIAM EWINGS Mother: JANE Hopefully someone can find William and father William on the 1841 to see if that helps.

Hi Everyone, Thanks so much for your kind words! I am so glad that you are all following me and helping with your wonderful advice and encouragement.
I had this message sent to me that I will copy so everyone can see:
Hi Paula Sorry I can't post on your thread as I haven't renewed my sub.
Have you seen the new LMA records on Ancestry? Couldn't find any of your immediate Ewins but you might!
I was looking for William, son of William and Charlotte and as I scrolled through the parents names I found a child to them called Hannah, baptised in 1852. In the margin it says she was actually born 1844. Her father, William, is a basketmaker and they are living at Parker Street.
Hope you find some more!
Happy hunting
Julie
Thanks for that Julie! I will have a look. I have a feeling that the subscription that I have with Ancestry does NOT allow me to access some of the recently added content. If I find anything that I cannot access I have been emailing details to my second cousin(in Scotland) who has a different type of subscription that allows him access.
Selena.....thanks for your message.I have been looking for Robert Ewins on the 1841 census but haven't really found a proper match. From my research it seems that Finsbury and St Giles are definately in the same place...perhaps someone who knows more can explain.
I will have a bit of a look at this new information and see what comes up. I will also post some information(soon) about Richard Jones and family who settled in Werstern Australia.
Best wishes, Paula.

Hello Everyone,
I have FINALLY managed to put down some information to tell you about the Jones Family from Western Australia. I have found a lot of information that I am still sorting through but I thought that everyone would like a brief update.
You may recall that I was looking for the sister of Joseph John Michael Gabriel Ewins who I thought was called Julia Ewins(junior)-she is the mother of Richard Jones who went to Western Australia.
It seems her name was actually Mary S Ewins and she was born in Bloomsbury around 1852(it seems likely that her birth was not registered either).I did find Julia Ewins and her husband Robert on the 1851 census with a daughter called Mary in my earlier searches-I couldn't find ANY of them in 1861 and I still haven't found Mary in 1871.She married Thomas William Jones in St Giles in March 1874-I have ordered the marriage certificate to try and confirm her father’s name.I have only found her on the 1891 and 1901 census ,so far, under her married name.
1891 England Census about Mary Jones Name: Mary Jones Age: 39 Estimated birth year: abt 1852 Relation: Wife Spouse's name: Thomas Gender: Female Where born: Bloomsbury Civil parish: Stratford Le Bow St Mary Ecclesiastical parish: St Pauls Town: Bow and Bromley of The Tower Hamlets County/Island: London Country: England Street Address:
Occupation:
Condition as to marriage:
Education:
Employment status: View image Registration district: Poplar Sub-registration district: Bow ED, institution, or vessel: 13 Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age Thomas Jones 39 Mary Jones 39 William Jones 11 Robert Jones 9 1901 England Census about Mary Jones Name: Mary Jones Age: 49 Estimated birth year: abt 1852 Relation: Wife Spouse's name: Thomas Gender: Female Where born: Bloomsbury, London, England Civil parish: St Mary Stratford Bow Ecclesiastical parish: St Stephen County/Island: London Country: England Street Address:
Occupation:
Condition as to marriage:
Education:
Employment status: View image Registration district: Poplar Sub-registration district: Bow ED, institution, or vessel: 8 Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 142 Household Members: Name Age Thomas Jones 49 Mary Jones 49 Robert Jones 19 Richard Jones 19 Eleanor Jones 12
They had 5 children: Mary Ann b.1871 who married David Eastwell Dec 1890 in Poplar,Thomas William b.1880,Robert b.1882,Richard Jones(who went to WA)b.1884 and Eleanor(Nell)b.1889 who married James Gunn Dec 1910 in Poplar.
Richard Jones was born in Bow and at some stage went to Scotland. He joined the Royal Scots and in 1912 married Margaret Stewart Marshall in Edinburgh. In November 1927 he brought his family from Tranent,Scotland,by boat, as part of the Soldier Settlement Scheme .”Departed from Tilbury Docks aboard Orama.Arrived 13/12/1927”-this is listed on “The Welcome Wall” of WA under “Richard & Margaret Jones” .
They had a farm as part of the Soldier Settlement scheme but it was not tobacco…it was a potato farm in Bussellton. This was a very hard life and they had to abandon the farm during the depression. Richard and Margaret had 5 sons and a daughter,so they have many descendants in Australia today.I am still sorting and gathering lots of information but thought you would like to see where my search has ended up. Thank you so much to everyone who has helped with this search…that is not over yet :) I will let you know what information is contained on the marriage certificate when it arrives. Best wishes, Paula x

Excellent Paula! Good to be able to tie in that 1851 census with Julia Ewins. Interesting that Mary called her sons Richard & Robert after her brothers (and they appear to be twins?) . Pity we can't find the family in 1861- I have searched loads of times! Julie
