Hi Victoria,
Thanks so much for your input...have started searching already!
Something else I just noticed on the 1871 census page.....the Bunyon family(who Julia is living with on the 1881 census as Julia Ewens age 41 widow) are at the bottom of the page. They were her neighbours.
I'm beginnig to think that Julia and William Kenedy may not have married as she is called Julia Ewens widow 10 years later and is alone again.
Thanks Paula

I think you're right about the not-married bit, Paula.
(Just dropping in because I'm probably the only one still awake!)
If you search at FreeBMD for
marriages surname KEN*Y (the name may likely have been KENNEDY with two "n"s) given name WILLIAM spouse's given name JUL* 1850-1881 (firing wide)
there isn't one to Julia Ewins or anything like -- but there also isn't one that would be a good match for that couple otherwise.
Did you look for that couple in 1861?
Unfortunately I can't identify William Kenedy in 1861 -- too many with similar birth details, but none born in Hadley specifically -- but I might suspect this William Kennedy:
Name: William Kennedy Age: 22 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1839 Relation: Ordinary Seaman Gender: Male Where born: London, Middlesex, England Civil Parish: Vessels County/Island: Royal Navy Country: England
(I love censuses. Timothy Leary was also on board!)
No sign of that Richard or Robert with mother Jul* in 1861, either ... and no Richard Ew* birth anywhere around those times in Middlesex ... but there is this:
Births Mar 1857 Ewens Robert Bethnal Gn 1c 258

Hi Evie,Rose and Ozibird!
Thanks so much for your hard work...I'm sure I am going crosseyed trying to work out some of these census pages!
I had decided that the 1902 death entry in Barnet was probably the one I was looking for (until she started adding random husbands! ha ha)I think my Aunt in Kent is going to get the certificate.
With regards to Joseph Ewins senior...I have no date of birth and no town of birth.I assume he died before 1881 as Julia was a widow on the 1881 census(assuming it is really her of course!)He was listed as a deceased harnessmaker on the 1900 wedding certificate of his son,Joseph junior.
I also have not pinpointed the birth of Julia Ewins(nee Fitzgerald). On the census entries she is listed as born in London or Middlesex.(once again..if they are her) There seem to be a lot of Julia Fitzgeralds around-lots are Irish.St Giles in the Fields is apparently an Irish area.We think her husband**SORRY>>HER SON>>JUNIOR<<-was born in Bloomsbury but this is from his Army papers.Joseph junior did end up in Belfast after joining the Army but we didn't think we had an Irish connection before that.
Also I keep wondering why they ended up in Barnet.
Thanks so much for this fantastic teamwork...unfortunately my kids are home from school now and are kicking me off the computer(darn time zones...things hot up and I have to leave!) Everything I know so far is included in this thread if that helps.
Ps. I have also had trouble finding births, deaths and possible marriages of these latest additions! Back again tomorrow Paula

Hello Everyone,
Thank you all once again for all of your help!
It is wonderful to have you all adding your opinions as after a while I find that I begin to doubt my instincts.I really value the combined research experience that you are all so generously sharing with me!
I also searched the 1861 census and saw the William Kennedy(ordinary seaman) that Evie mentioned. I also had a feeling that he could be the one that Julia Ewins(listed as Julia Kenedy) was living with in 1871. I don't think they were actually married and haven't found a wedding reference.
I still haven't found Julia on the 1861 census living around the Barnet area but if her son Joseph Ewins(junior) was really born in Bloomsbury in 1863 then she probably hadn't moved to the Barnet area yet. I still havent found her on the 1861 census at all (in any district).
The Julia Ewins that Rose found on the 1901 census seems to fit in very well with "Julia Kenedy" on the 1871 census. However it adds a new element...she was born in Limerick,Ireland. Her son Richard Ewins is listed as being born in Bloomsbury which is where my elusive Joseph Ewins(junior) is said to have been born. I will keep an open mind!
I have to vacate the computer now...kids with homework again...but would really appreciate any input that anyone is willing to offer.
I can't thank you all enough for all your help with this.
Back tomorrow,
Paula.

Hello everyone,
Today I am thinking that perhaps themarriage in 1849 between a Julia Fitzgerald and a Robert Ewins in St. Giles(1 81) could well be the correct one.
My reasoning is:
Joseph Ewins(junior) was said to be born in 1863 in Bloomsbury. His mother was Julia Fitzgerald/Ewins.Perhaps he didn't really know his father as he may have died when Joseph(junior) was very young. My information about Joseph(juniors) father has come from his marriage certificate from 1900"Joseph Ewins harnessmaker deceased".
There is an entry for a death in March 1864 for a Robert Ewens Mile End(1c 510).If he was Joseph's father then he died when Joseph was very young.
I am still seaching the census entries and births, deaths and marriages to see if this will fit in.
Any opinions about this would be most welcome. Perhaps I have missed something?
I have been searching for Julia Fitzgerald in the 1841 census and found this: Name: Julia Fitzgerald Age: 15 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1826 Gender: Female Where born: Middlesex, England Civil Parish: St Giles in The Fields Hundred: Ossulstone (Holborn Division) County/Island: Middlesex Country: England Registration district: St Giles in the Fields Sub registration district: St Giles North Household Members: Name Age Ann Fitzgerald 35 Julia Fitzgerald 15 Richard Fitzgerald 10 Any opinions? Thank you.
I am still searching on the census entries for Richard Ewins who married a Julia Fitzgerald in 1849...they are on the 1851 census with a daughter Mary aged 2. I will try and find more about Mary and Richard Ewins.
I really would value any opinions or input on this.
Thanks so much for your help. Paula.

Hi all,
I decided to try and find traces of the following people:
1851 England Census Name: Robert Ewens Age: 27 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1824 Relation: Head Spouse's Name: Julia Gender: Male Where born: London, England Civil Parish: St Giles in The Fields County/Island: Middlesex Country: England Occupation: Basket Maker Registration district: St Giles Sub registration district: St Giles South ED, institution, or vessel: 12 Household schedule number: 286 Household Members: Name Age Robert Ewens 27 Julia Ewens 23 Ireland Mary Ewens 2
I have found a possible birth for daughter Mary Ewins:
Birth Mar 1849 Ewins, Mary St. Giles 1 82
I have also found two possible deaths for daughter Mary Ewins:
Death Jun 1849 Ewins, Mary Islington 3 204
Death Jun 1852 Ewins, Mary Dryer St. Luke 1b 331
I am now trying to locate both Julia Ewins and Robert Ewins on the 1861 census. They are probably in the St. Giles,Finsbury,Bloomsbury area.
If anyone is willing to have a look also I would be really grateful.
Thanks so much. Paula.

I have just come across this entry on the 1861 census. The handwritten entry is very hard to decipher. Does anyone else think that it could possible be "Julia Ewen" instead of "Julia Curwen"?
Name: Julia Curwen Age: 34 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1827 Relation: Boarder Gender: Female Where born: Wchapel, Middlesex, England Civil Parish: St George in The East Ecclesiastical parish: Christchurch County/Island: Middlesex Country: England Registration district: St George In The East Sub registration district: St Paul ED, institution, or vessel: 11 Household schedule number: 182 Household Members: Name Age Luers Brockhouse 51 Emma Brockhouse 41 Julia Curwen 34 I still haven't found Robert and Julia together on the 1861 census. I am still searching for more Julias and any Robert Ewins.
Thanks so much for any help. Paula.

Probably not -
1851 - Julia Curwin Thomas abt 1826 Whitechapel, Middlesex, England Wife St Mary Whitechapel, Middlesex 1871: Julia Kirwan abt 1827 Whitechapel, Middlesex, England Lodger St George in The East, London
BTW, the first death for Mary Ewins is before the 1851 census which is where you found her.

Thanks Potty and Ozibird,
It really helps to have someone else look over these entries.
I am such an idiot....I noticed this morning that I listed that death entry for Mary in 1849 when she was alive in 1851.Oops!
I will keep plodding along. Thanks so much for your help.

Hi Everyone,
A huge thank you to everyone to has taken the time to read through this epic story!
Thank you all so much for your help and contributions-I could not have advanced this far without your help.
I am awaiting the arrival of the death certificate of Julia Ewins who died in Barnet in 1902 to see if this helps.(I have a relative living in Belfast who has ordered it).
If anyone has any more advice or ideas for me it would be most welcome as I still have not located the birth certificate for Joseph Ewins.
Fingers crossed !!
Paula.

Hello Everyone, I have not added to this lately as I have been busily trying to search for Julia Ewins on the 1861 census...page by page.
I would absolutely love anyone who is willing to get involved with this frustrating search to feel free to join in!!The whole saga is detailed in this post.Everyone has already helped me so much.I could not have come this far without the help of so many kind, helpful and generous people.
My second cousin in Belfast got the death certificate for the Julia Ewins who died in Barnet in 1902.He is going to send me a copy.He told me that it says she died at Austens Yard,Barnet and was aged 64.The person present at death was R.Ewins.She was the widow of Robert Ewins, master basketmaker.
This information fits in with Julia Ewins on the 1901 census.Although she was aged 73 on that census she was living at Austens Yard,Barnet. Her son Richard Ewins was living with her.
This also seems to point to the fact that her husband probably was not called Joseph Ewins(harnessmaker) but in fact Robert Ewins(basketmaker). There is a wedding entry between a Julia Fitzgerald and a Robert Ewins in 1849 at St Giles that is probably them.
If anyone is willing to try and locate them on the 1861 census(I am trying to find 51 Parker St,St Giles/Finsbury...this is where they were in 10 years earlier in 1851) I would be most grateful.
I believe they had not yet moved to Barnet because Joseph Ewins(Julia's son) was said to be born in Bloomsbury in 1863.
We still cannot find his birth certificate and my elderly Aunt is considering going from church to church in the Bloomsbury area trying to find his baptism records! I would dearly love to tell her that we had solved the mystery at that this is not necessary!!
Thanks so much, Paula.

Parker Street is in District 11 & 12 of St Giles South according to the enumerator descriptions.
Nos. 39-43 are in District 12; no Robert & Julia. Nos. 1-27 are in District 11; no Robert & Julia.
I looked at a few other streets while sifting through - no Ewens/Ewins.

Just thinking aloud really but as they are missing in 1861 and also the missing birth c1863, could they be abroad?
Are there any connections overseas around that time that you know of?
