Scotlands People Records Query

Robert Report 9 Feb 2009 23:01

Trying to trace my great grand father Patrick Slaven. Had no details what so ever as dead when grand mother was married.
Went on Scotlands People and did a census for 1901 , which he came up as staying in 39 Giliers Street ,Burgh ward of Springburn.
He had 2 daughters, Annie & Margaret aged 1year & 1 week old,
both born in Glasgow.
On doing a birth search on Margaret for 1901 it comes up as no match.
On doing a birth search for Annie 1900 it comes up as 1 match, on checking this out ,it 's for an Annie with wrong parents that i am looking for.
Any ideas on what i should do next, as this is my only means of finding g/grand parents.
No access to grand mothers birth record as she wasn't born until 1911. Have only got names of G/grand parents from her marriage cert.

You might try getting Patrick and Mary's marr rego. Hopefully, it's with SP and not in Dublin. (For latter, check:
http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.asp?wci=thread&tk=1120535
and http://www.groireland.ie/ )

My ex's gran was a Slevin, and this name is often spelled in variant ways, and almost any vowel can be substituted for any other vowel.

Here's Ancestry's 1901 transcription:

1901 Scotland Census
Registration Number: 644/3
Registration district: Dennistoun
Civil Parish: Glasgow Townhead
County: Lanarkshire
Address: 39 Villiers Street
ED: 91
Household schedule number: 123
Page: 25
Roll: CSSCT1901_277

Patrick Slaven 32 Ireland Head Mason Labourer
Mary Slaven 28 Ireland Wife
Annie Slaven 1 Glasgow, Lanarksh Daur
Margaret Slaven 1 mon Glasgow, Lanarksh Daur

They were quite likely to be RC, so you might find a likely RC church in the area and find out where their records are now. Incidentally, I find Ancestry's street name= Villiers more plausible than Gilliers, but I could find neither on a modern streetmap. Maybe you should consider contacting the Mitchell - see:
http://www.mitchelllibrary.org/virtualmitchell/

Just following on from mgnv,

There is a Villiers Street listed on the 1913-1914 Glasgow Valuation Roll. Ward 6 which covers;

Ward 6 - Balgrayhill, Balornock, Blackhill, Blochairn, Colston Germiston, Petershill, Roystonhill, Sighthill, Springburn

bye Helen

p.s. a little bit more information on Villiers Street sourced from the web http://discuss.glasgowguide.co.uk/lofiversion/index.php/t5129.html.

"So where exactly are Turner Street and Villiers Street? Well, they no longer exist! The last time I was home in Glasgow, I purchased an 1894 map of the St Rollox (Townhead, Port Dundas and Garngad) district of Glasgow from the Mitchell library. In 1894, the northern part of Garngad consisted of 4 parallel streets, each running in a south to north direction. Starting from the west, the 4 streets were Turner Street, Villiers Street, Bright Street and Cobden Street. These 4 parallel streets were enclosed on the north by Charles Street and on the south by Garngad Road. Both Charles St and Garngad Road still exist today, though Garngad Road is now called Royston Road. In the late 1800s these 6 congested streets of north Garngad could be described as a 'Little Ireland' "

Hi guys,
Still searching.Burgh ward was Springburn. Parliementary Division of St Rollex and Parish of Townhead. He was listed as a Mason labourer.
His kids where aged 1yr & 1Week old. His wife name was Mary. As for the G being a V it is quite possible as i had difficulty trying too make it out.
His religion was RC, and unfortunatly i think they were married in Ireland,
as nothing comes up in SP for them. Either there or in England, as i don't even know when they originally came over.
Thanks guys for the advice and in taking an intrest.
Rob.

Its been a while ( 3yrs)., but just a wee update on the above post. Patrick Slevin b. 1881 in Tempo,Co.Fermanagh. Married Mary Kelly 1901 and had a son John b.1901 in Tempo, Co. Fermanagh. Still not found death cert for Patrick but think may have died during The Great War. Nearest person i can find is a Patrick Slevin, aged 35yrs, Acting sargeant with the Enniskillen Volunteers, died 1916. Only problem is that although he fits the parameter of my Patrick, how do i find out if it is him as no next of kin details are given. As for my Gran, i found her birth cert, born in Cambuslang and in 1911 census also in Cambuslang. Patrick's parents where Thomas Slevin and Mary Jane Meehan married also in Co.Fermanagh and had at least 7 other children, all of which can be found in the 1901 & 1911 census' of Ireland. Mary Jane Meehan ( mother) died somewhere between censusus and the father Thomas remarried in 1910 to Mary Ann unknown. As far as im aware Patrick was the only one to leave the shores of Ireland.

The bride was Marianne Halpin or Marianne McElroy (probably the same woman, having been married before with both maiden and married names given)

Robert Report 30 Oct 2012 00:06

Hi MarieCeleste. The death you have given for Mary Jane Meehan sounds about right 1909 as does the age and area, couldn't find this my self, thanks. I think the marriage you have given for Thomas & Marianne Halpin is one i came across through IFHF. Although it sounds to be them, i was put off because of the ages entered, although area and year are correct. Didnt realise the McElroy name was also entered, didnt get that piece of info. Would you say that the ages entered are in error or deliberate because of the age gap.
Birth years for both were 1859 for Mary Jane Meehan & 1860 for Thomas Slevin. I do have transcribed MC for them.

Robert

Robert Report 30 Oct 2012 00:21

Sorry MarieCeleste, going by info given on IFHF from MC, Mary Jane Meehan born 1859/1860 and Thomas Slevin 1861/1862. Thomas father was called James Slevin and Mary Jane's was called John Meehan (labourer ), no mother details were entered. Marriage was in 1880 if i remember correctly in Co.Fermanagh. Thanks

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 30 Oct 2012 17:49

Hello Robert, I only have access to the index which doesn't give the ages at marriage. What were the ages shown on the 1910 marriage?

I'm struggling to find Thomas Slevin on either the 1901 or 1911 Irish census - whereabouts was he? What was his age per the census?

His first marriage appears to be Enniskillen:

Ireland, Civil Registration Marriages Index, 1845-1958
Name: Thomas Slevin
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1880
Registration district: Enniskillen
Volume: 2
Page: 87
FHL Film Number: 101253

Mary Jane Meehan on same page.

Robert Report 13 Nov 2012 01:01

Hi MarieCeleste. He is listed in 1901 census as Thomas Slavin. He is residing at 3 Mullinadoran (Deerpark) Fermanagh. He is also listed with his 1st wife Mary Jane and 5 of his children. His occupation is listed as Caretaker.
In 1911 Thomas is listed as Thomas Sleven. He is residing at 3 Tattinbar ( Deerpark) Fermanagh. He is also listed with his 2nd wife and 3 of his children along with John Kennawan( labourer ). Thomas is listed as Farmer. Think John Kennawan may in fact be John Kirwan, a relation, as Thomas' son James was married to Sarah Kirwan. As for the ages in 1910 marriages i do not have them at hand, will have to go through paperwork to find the copy of transcript from IFHF, but there seemed to be a conciderable age gap if my memory recalls. In 1911 census there ages are entered as 50 & 46yrs. The 1880 marriage between Thomas & Mary Jane Meehan was in Tempo, Enniskillen. His son Patrick (g/grandfather ) was also married there to Mary Kelly in 1901. This is the Patrick i am having no luck in finding death record for. Thanks.

The GRO(I) index thru 1958 (excl N. Ireland post-partition) is available at:
https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list#page=1®ion=UNITED_KINGDOM_IRELAND

One can purchase certs (or cheaper still, the uncertified images of the rego) via:
http://www.groireland.ie/

To find out the other names on the page (assuming you don't have an Ancestry sub, do a free search at Ancestry in district=Enniskillen, year=1880 and keyword=87 (the page #) and get:

Exact Search Results - Ireland, Civil Registration Marriages Index, 1845-1958
View Record Name Registration Date Registration district
View Record Helen Carson info year Enniskillen
View Record Jane Lannen info year Enniskillen
View Record Jane Lennan info year Enniskillen
View Record Andrew Lucy info year Enniskillen
View Record Loftus Albert Maguire info year Enniskillen
View Record Denis M'Caffrey info year Enniskillen
View Record Mary Jane Meehan info year Enniskillen
View Record Bridget M'Keaney info year Enniskillen
View Record Thomas Slevin info year Enniskillen

Course, without a sub, you won't get full details, and you can potentially get hits from all 4 quarters, so you next need to go back to FS and look these names up to see which ones are in the Oct-Nov-Dec quarter.

Hi mgnv.

I already have an extract copy of marriage for Thomas Slevin purchased from IFHF as said above. It is Patrick's death cert i am unable to find on Scotlands people site, which led me to think died during Great War, but unable to varify if found my Patrick or not.
Thanks.
