I would be very grateful if someone could do a look-up for me on the USA MilitaryList - WW1 Draft Registration Cards 1917-1918.
Using my UK Ancestry sub, I have found that a Herbert Edwin Hooper is listed there. born 1889 England. Address: California.
I would like to know the details from this entry, if anyone here could help.

That's curious, isn't it? He was drafted in America but enlisted in Canada?

Hi Rose
Many thanks for your information. You have already helped me with this family, back in July 08, hence the link above.
Following that post I did actually manage to contact a living member of the family in the US 1930 census - Raymond B Hooper, who is now 85!
He told me that his father Herbert Edwin Hooper had served in WW1 in the Canadian army - which your post 22.43 confirms. But he knows little about his father's early life in the US/Canada.
I was then surprised by finding that he had completed a Draft Registration while living in the USA.
Now you have posted that information, I have realised that I have it, but did not know that it was for the US Services. I thought that it was for his registration as an Alien.
It seems to me that Herbert must have wandered about somewhat. From what you have told me, I think that:
He arrived in Canada from the UK in 1914.
He joined the Canadian Army for WW1 in 1916. [I learned from Raymond that he was invalided out when gassed]
He must have returned to Canada from Europe and passed into the US and completed a Draft Registration card there in Pasadena in 1918 .
Then he returned to Canada to marry a Canadian girl Amelia Brett in 1920 & had 2 children there.
Then he moved to California and had 3 more children there.
Quite a start to his life!

To Judy
Many thanks for your kind offer. As I stated to Rose, I have that image but thought that it for something else.
To Margaret
Thank you also. That certainly is Herbert's death registration. Whoever registered his death got his age wrong by 1 year. A common error, I believe.
I have just confirmed from my records that he was born in 1890 so I was also wrong in my OP.

Rose & Margaret
Many thanks for the wealth of new information. Raymond will be amazed at all this.
Ref DOB. Yes, I was wrong/confused about that. I note that I had originally recorded 1889 at Barton Regis - then mysteriously changed it to 1890.
I'm still a little confused about that US WW1 Draft registration Card. At the time he registered in 1918, Herbert.had served in the Canadian Army and was discharged unfit. But maybe the law in the US required all men between certain ages to register for the Draft in case they were required. His 'unfitness' is not recorded there, is it?
I also cannot figure out how he made his financial way between leaving school at 14 and his marriage in 1920 as a Student and later a Preacher. Not much money there to raise a family.
Maybe the E & W 1911 census, about to be released here, will shed a little light on his early years in Bristol.
