it looks like 2009 still doesnt do book reports though, which is what I love. So think I will stick to Legacy 7 for now.

You are probably adding an image to the program of the census? I add all the census details to the notes section.

Margaret, it you have 2006 you just click on the worldwide search thing and it brings up the census results, at that point it asks if you want to save it to your FTM.

Personally I prefer to go to ancestry direct, find the results, copy the information (you highlight it by clicking on the right side of your mouse, scrolling over the bit you want and then copy) and then go to the notes of the person on FTM2006 and add the info to that by click on the right of the mouse and then paste.

I started of with FTM but my brother bought me Legacy a few years ago as as Christmas present. I've recently upgraded to the deluxe version and I find the whole program really easy to find my way around and as has been said before, the charting is excellent.

I also use the relationship calculator a lot - especially as I now have a lot of intermarrying between familes.

I hope this helps.

I suppose it depends on what you've got used to and after you've invested a lot of time and effort into one system it is hard to change.

I began using Genopro (free version) when I started doing online family history then I updated to the bought version. These can be downloaded online from the genopro website.

It does very clear trees and I can merge trees and select sections.

I can't get all my ancestors on one tree anyway without feeling really lost so I find it easier to do loads of smaller ones.

It works OK for me at the moment. I could do with downloading a really good ahnentafel program at some point because I'm doing mine on Word and it is already 28 pages long with one ancestor on each line. I need a program which does the numbering for me as after a while even doubling or dividing by 2 gets complicated with the huge numbers involved.
That can wait till I have some spare cash and time to look into it.

It all depends how you record your information as to how easy it is to print off.

I use both facts and notes as follows.

BMD details go in the notes field, either for the individual or under marriage. If I don't have the certificate, but do have the reference I record the GRO ref

Deaths Mar 1898
Huddersfield 9a 213
Goldthorpe Lydia Age 81

Marriages Dec 1888
Huddersfield 9a 472
Goldthorpe Albert
Coldwell Sarah

I prefer Facts for Census details, and mainly use two, one for address, the other for occupation. This means that each is always recorded in the same format

Census Address 1851 6 High Street, Honley
Census Address 1861 22 Moor Lane, Crossland

Occupation 1881 Silk Dyer
Occupation 1891 Foreman Weaver

Address generally goeas against the head of the household, unless there is a relative lodging there, when I show it seperately i.e.

Census Address 1891 With son Albert, Back Lane Almondbury

Other relevant info goes in the notes, as required.

Make sure yo use the Options drop down in your reports to ensure you print the appropriate info.

Other people may do things differently, this is one of the plus points of FTM, it is so flexible, but this works for me.
