Just thought I'd do a quick poll.

I used to use family tree maker 2006, but have since switched to Legacy, which I do love and am wondering whether to upgrade to the deluxe version.

However I thought i'd check what everyones favorite program is first. So if you could answer the below that would be great (I will answer too, so you will need to delete out my answer and put your own).

What is your favorite family tree program?: Legacy 7.0
What do you like about it?: All the features and charting etc
Which family tree programs have you used?: Heredis (Mac), Reunion (Mac), Family Tree Maker and Legacy.

Thanks,

Legacy 6.0
I have the deluxe version, but haven't upgraded to the new one yet.
The deluxe version produces excellent book reports.I have the Legacy charting as a stand alone, but I think it is included as standard in version 7

I must get round to upgrading, but to be honest I am very happy with what I have

I use Family Tree Maker. I did use both at one point but stuck with FTM in the end.

what is it that you like about Family Historian??

I have never tried it.

FTM 6, and have upgraded at least 4 times.

Version 8 is still in the box as I haven't got around to trying it yet. I gather that there is an upgrade to fix many of the shortcomings reported in the original release.

I guess we've all got our favourites. I've got FTM 2006 and am very hapy with it, especially as I am totally computer illiterate and was relieved to find FTM v user friendly. Right from the start I could get on with it.

I have only ever used Legacy and upgraded to Delux 7 and like the charting program that comes with it.

I agree that the reports Legacy produce are great but there is a problem with source numbers in version 7 which they are taking months to sort out.

Well Ive got FTM2005/2006/2008 and 2009 but I still go back to 2006 - I just feel much more comfortable with it than any of the other versions.

I haven't tried many others except Legacy, but I do like Family Historian - easy to use, unlimited notes, very flexible, excellent reports suite - I keep everything on it including copies of photos and original documents.

Have downloaded trial version of Family Historian 3.1.2 but only have three days to go of trial, OH has bought me the full version for Christmas. If you buy FH now from certain places online (google FHUG) you get a free copy of version 4 when it comes out in February. Was really stuck between FH and FTM 2009 but the lack of flexiliblity with trees let FTM down, FH is brilliant in that respect and with reports etc.

Family Historian 3.1 is the only one for me.

Tried FTM and looked at others :(

CelticShiv

CelticShiv Report 6 Dec 2008 16:06

the one thing I didnt like about FTM is that I like to include all census information in my tree and when you print off a book or report it will only show 1 of the census and not all of them. (unless I was doing it wrong)

With legacy it shows everything.

Can i just say ive just invested in FTM 2009 platinum because i needed some new software and it also comes with 6 months ancestry registration. Can i just say how amazing it is, so clever, wish i had discovered it ages ago!!

And now the price is £35 on amazon came within 2 days! - bargain!

CelticShiv

CelticShiv Report 6 Dec 2008 23:32

do they have charts and reports on ftm 2009, as they didn't on 2008 and I hated it, hence why I switched to Legacy.

Rachelle

Rachelle Report 7 Dec 2008 11:02

I am probably not using the software to its full potential, am a bit of a druid. But FTM 2006 seems to do a fair job. I never learnt how to incorporate census data, so have typed all that out myself - can anyone tell me how it is done automatically?

With any program.
