Hi Mike
Wondering whether you can help - looking for a marriage of Joseph Robert Horsley, brides name unknown, sometime between 1890 and 1895.
Their first child Emily Sarah Elizabeth Horsley was born in 1895, followed by Joseph Horsley in 1897 and then by John Henry Horsley 1900 - all these births were registered in the Loughborough registration district.
Joseph Robert Horsley married for a second time in Sep Qtr 1904 to Emma Hurst. Presuming that his first wife had passed away sometime between 1900 and 1904.
Have found a Joseph Horsley as a Soldier, born Leicester in the 1901 census, unable to find any of his children and indeed his first wife (name unknown) for the same census.
Hoping that you can help.
Sorry Mike, just re-read you thread title and see that it is Leicester and not Leicestershire that you can help with.

Greeting’s & Welcome…….. Lynne.
NO….. we take on anything to do with BOTH City & County of Leicestershire. Beverly could not get the Shire bit in on the title due to limited amount of letters allowed……..
RIGHT…….
MARRIAGE :~
September Quarter 1894.. Joseph Horsley ~ Either :~ Kate Chapman. / Margaret Isabella Morris / Elizabeth Stanyard. Loughborough.
So to be sure the way is to order the marriage certificate Sept Qrt. 1894. No’, 7a 228. And just quote Joseph’s name
But if you can wait a bit I ‘ll have a look to see if I can find the Church registers Next time I’m at the Records Office this week and report back on here for you
I’ve found Joseph on the 1891 Census RG. 12. / 2514.. 50. / Page. 17…Keyword……… = Schofield Loughborough No’. 20 “ The Rushes “ Elizabeth Schofield. Head. Mar. 55. Lodging house keeper. b Loughborough. JOSEPH HORSLEY. Single. Son. 22.( b c 1869 ). Boatman….Bar-gee b Ditto. John Horsley. Single. Son.18.Gen. Labourer. b….. Ditto. John Schofield. Single.12. Boatman’s assistant. Bar-gee. b Ditto.
Plus 11 other Lodgers within the household.
Doing back to the names on the Marriage .... I could find Kate Chapman on the 1891 Census RG 2516./ 29. / Page. 5. Just round the corner on Swan Street “ The Green Man Public House. “ Aged. 22.( b c 1869) Maid servant domestic b Shepshed.
Down the Road from The Rushes ......
Elizabeth Stanyard RG 12. / 2515. / Page. 41. Loughborough. No’. 35.Russell Street.
Joseph Stanyard. Head. Mar. 58. F.W.K. Cotton….b Loughborough. Ann. Wife.57. b Nottingham. Sarah Ann Dau. 25. F.W.K. Cotton. b Loughborough. ELIZABETH. Dau. 22. ( b c 1869) ….. Ditto…. b Ditto. Eliza. Dau. 20. Ditto…b Ditto. Mary. Dau. 14. Hosiery Factory Hand. b Ditto.
BURIALS FOUND……. TO DATE :~
LOUGHBOROUGH CIVIC CEMETERY
Burial Reg. No. 15047. Joseph Robert Horsley. Abode. Loughborough. 16th. August. 1913. Aged. 44. ( b c 1869 )
Burial Reg. No’. 18558. Elizabeth Horsley. Abode. Loughborough. 12th. September. 1924 Aged. 54. ( b c 1870 )
SHEPSHED CEMETERY.
Kate Horsley. 17th. June. 1917. Aged. 19. ( b c 1899 )
NO Burial details found for a Margaret Isabella Horsley Plenty Horsley burials within Loughborough
So. It seems a bit complicated I think until I See that Marriage Certificate ……

PART TWO. ……
Greeting’s again. .........Lynne.
Right. ……Joseph Married ......Kate Chapman. . Fiche No’. D E 2601. / 4...... second of five fiches…… Marriage Registers read thus :~
Page 63.
All Saints Parish Church. Loughborough.
Entry No’. 125….Dated 9th. July. 1884.
Joseph Horsley. 24. Bachelor. Burg-ee ( Boatman.) Abode…..No’ 20 The Rushes. Loughborough. Father. :~ Joseph Horsley. Labourer.
Kate Chapman. 23. Spinster. Abode. …The Infirmary Baxter-gate. Loughborough.. Father. :~ John Chapman. Labourer.
Married in this Church By :~ Superintendent Registrar’s Certificate. By Me :~ A. Altburne. Curate.
Both signed the Register in their own signatures. In the Presence of :~ James Lumby. Elizabeth Foster.
Superintendent Registrar’s Certificate.:~
This is the third method by which you could get married…….. Usually issued to Nonconformists when they wish to marry in a Church. Which is not their usual place of worship. Or .... ... That one of the Party is not of the faith of the Church where the marriage is performed. …….So need the Registrar to sit in and hear the Banns read on behalf of the Nonconformist
Or …..
They were not prepared to wait the three weeks for the Banns to be read. They just went to the Registrar’s Office paid the fee And signed a Affidavit to state that there was no reason or impediment why they could not marry……..
The registrar then satisfied…….Gave them the Certificate. Which they took to the Minister of the Church in which they wished to be married in………usually within three days.
I did try to see if I could find a Baptism for those Children which you posted But sorry to say I drew a blank in all the three main Churches in Loughborough at the time…….
But from experience I find that Boatman usually wait till they have a few to be Baptised and then have a multi Baptism which could well be several years AFTER their births & usually where they are moored for the Winter months. ……
So. …… I’ll keep my eyes open.
MIKE……..

Sorry I could not see this marriage in St: Peter’s Parish Church Oadby registers……
I also had a look at several Churches which were close to Oadby but again drew a Blank….
So to save time I suggest you order the Certificate Using the Ref. No’s shown on the G.R.O. registers
March Qrt. 1904. Herbert DAVICE ~ SARAH ELLEN TAYLOR. LEICESTER DISTRICT. No’. 7 a 252. Order it in the Name of Sarah then you’ll get the right one.
Plus you need to find out from the lists of people who went to the U.S.A For the dates Herbert went " Walkies ".....

Hi Mike,
I hoping that you can help me again!
Harry Hall born Jun Qtr 1894 at Whitwick, Leicestershire registered at Ashby de la Zouch vol 7a page 112.
Harry married Mary Ann Horsley in Sep Qtr 1914, registered in Loughbro' district vol 7a page 329.
My trouble is that two Harry Hall's born at a similar time are showing in the 1901 census, one as the son of George and Sarah Hall and the other as the Grandson of Abel and Sarah Hall - would it be possible to check to see if fathers name is shown on the marriage?
Thanks in advance, once again
