i think theres a whithaven in sussex is'nt there ,,have you googled it?

I actually live in Whitehaven, and it's definitely in Cumbria, on the West Coast. The only other Whitehaven I've come across is in America.

As for it being a 'one-horse town', it depends what you want really. I wouldn't move from here, we're only minutes from the seaside, there are lakes less than an hour away in the Lake District. And as you said, we have all the history in the town.

I don't suppose it could have been Whitby?

There is a Whitworth abt 8 km S of Bacup, on the road to Bury via Rochdale. Both Whitworth and Bacup are within 5 km of the Yorks border on my 1954 map.

No need to apologise, confusion happens to us all.

Obviously some people classed it as Yorkshire although it's really Cumbria.

That's what we are saying, its on the West coast but your post at 10.46 said it was on the East coast of Yorkshire.

There is a Flamingo land ( a zoo) in North Yorkshire near Malton but not Whitehaven

This Georgian town, situated on the west coast of Cumbria, was one of the first post-renaissance planned towns in the country. Built on shipping and mining, both industries have now declined, but Whitehaven is never-the-less an attractive town and is one of the 40 Gem Towns in England (the only other in Cumbria being Cockermouth).

The development of Whitehaven owes much to the Lowther family, it was Sir John Lowther, inspired by Christopher Wren's designs for rebuilding London after the Great Fire of 1666, who laid out the original grid system of streets and specified the type of houses to be built.

On Flatt Walks, looking down Lowther Street is Sir John Lowther's former home, known as 'The Castle' since the beginning of the 18th Century. The building became Whitehaven Hospital in 1926, and is now housing. It was designed by Robert Adam, the most fashionable architect of his period.

well according to my atlas it is definitely on the West coast - I am positive about it's location - my sister's husband once refused a transfer there with his insurance company and when we saw where it was and what it looked like we could well understand - no offence to Whitehaven residents - but it's a one horse town!!!

The post code given takes you to Whitehaven in Cumbria on the west coast, not North Yorkshire
