Greeting’s Derek…..From the Leicestershire Thread…..

We’re on the trail of a William STRETTON……. b.c. 1786.

He appears to have lived at Coleorton in Leicestershire
But he marries Eleanor Warren from Melbourne
23rd. June. 1808.at Melbourne by Licence.

Then I spotted a possibility for his Father’s Marriage :~

William Stretton. ~ Eliza MEASURES.
8th. May. 1785.
Melbourne.
By Banns.

Could you have a look at Melbourne Baptisms for the said
William Stretton c.1786.
Which is one year after the Marriage

Thanking you in Anticipation.

MIKE.

Hi Margaret

I have pretty well all the Cd's....including MOnyash and beeley...I think you should accept that he Thomas died 1877 aged 75 is your man......all the other stuff we have found between us..the children, three wives etc all fit.......There is not a Needham in derbyshire baptised 1801/2.
Unfortunately..if he wasn't baptised..which happened a lot..then you'll never know his parents..unless you find a Needham born Tideswell around 1780.........and then you would be guessing..which is no good......Sorry love xxxx

Hi Derek

Yes that is the right fella and wife born London. She may well have been one of the poor kids that Ellis Needham shipped up to work in his factory. Whoever the Thomases were born 1785 and 1815 would not seem to be "mine". There is a Thomas to fit the 1815 one living at Market Place in 1841 with wife Ann and daughter Mary, in 1851 at Pot Market, same wife, Mary and 3 more children, and in 1861 at Back Lane. The one born 1785 was possibly dead by 1841 but it might be worth trying to check him out.

That only leaves the 2 chaps christened Monyash and Beeley. My Tideswell CD came today, I notice there are similar ones for Monyash and Beeley, but not sure of the value of paying £10 each when the man says he was born in Tideswell - but I couldn't trace either of them in 1841 in Monyash or Beeley.

Off to play with the CD, but I may be back in touch.

It has been invaluable to have you confirm my research (and find a couple of extra generations) - my friend was getting into a terrible tizz till I came along so he will be pleased too.

Best wishes

Margaret

Margaret.I have found your Census entries....and his wife and children........His wife Eliza was born in London......is this the right one?
If it is,it seems you have a pretty complete record of him..except that he was NOT baptised in Tideswell!! at least not in 1801......
1785 or 1815...take your pick!

Hi Derek

So despite all the good work on "my" William Needham, there is bugger all on my friend's Thomas. But he does appear on the censuses in 1841, 51, 61 and 71 in Tidewell as being born around 1801 in Tideswell. Derek, my pal, any ideas how to find out who he is? Will the fact that he lived at Town End on all four censuses lead us to anything? Is there a local archive that will tell us who lived at Town End, Tideswell in the 1800s? Do we know where Town End was? One is tempted to thing at the end of the Town, but that might be daft.

Any guesses from anyone in Derbyshire much appreciated, I think Derek and I need to ask around!

Best wishes

Margaret

Hi Derek
Thanks for looking, Beighton is in Yorkshire now but it was in Derbyshire in the 1800's although I wouldn't like to guess where the records are. Trouble is there are so many Staniforths in that area and John is a common name for them.

Once again thanks for looking

Derek

Derek Report 28 Oct 2008 10:21

Hi Uzzi........don't think i am going t9o be able to help you.Beighton is officially in South Yorkshire and may have its own parish records. There are loads of Staniforths close by..like Eckington only two miles away....but the only close match I can find is John Staniforth b 1783 Eckington.....I do't think he is the one you want..I'll ferret around fro a while.

Hi Margaret .I'm more than happy to follow up George's siblings for you......I'll let you know what i find......
Unfortunately i only have partial records for Hope Valley area.....so I'll have to search for Thomas elsewhere i think......
As for burial records....the only way you can find out who is in a grave is by whats on the stone.....or by cemetery records.....very difficult to find before about 1870..and we have 52 burials and no stones!! (at Tideswell.......

Hi Derek
back again ...do you have anything for the Beighton area ?

Madmeg

Madmeg Report 27 Oct 2008 19:47

Hi Derek

This is impressive after such a short time!

I sort of "had" William's brothers, presumably from IGI, I have an extra one Francis born 1793, but the confirmation is great cos of course I only have access to whatever is on IGI. I also sort of "had" George's brothers (but not the exact dates - are these birth dates or christening dates?).

I also sort of "had" Charles born early 1700s as a guess on my part, so 1693 is right.

Now re Charles b 1729 and Mary 1735, I also have Elizabeth 1731, these are probably from submitted records to IGI and unreliable compared to your records. I did not go any further back, so it is great that you have done so.

I note, however, that you have not located any fortune - and so far no Thomas, but I will see if I can search for George's brothers in the 1760s.

Unless of course, you'd like to do it for me....

But I do feel I have taken up a lot of your time.

Any luck with the burials I suggested?

Do you have any Cheshire ancestors I can help with, I have all sorts of CDs and stuff for the Macclesfield area.

Many, many thanks.

Margaret

Hello again Margaret

Lets go back to c 1670..when one THOMAS NEEDHAM was born..he married ANN.and moved from wherever to Beeley...There is only one family in Beeley and its all yours....
Their children were:
CHARLES NEEDHAM b.02.05.1693
Hannah 12.05.1695
Deborah 09.11.1699

CHARLES married Sarah Calton (of bakewell) 19.08.1726 and their children were:
CHARLES NEEDHAM 29.06.1729
Mary b 05.01.1735

CHARLES married Elizabeth Bradley (of bakewell) 18.05.1758 and had the following children:

Henry 18.02.1759
Dorothy 27.07.1760
Charles 23.05.1762
John 13.10.1763
GEORGE 17.03.1765

I am happy with this.and have confirmed your abcestorWilliam and taken him back a further three generations.....

Derek Report 27 Oct 2008 19:04

Ok Margaret..I have good news for you about Your WILLIAM NEEDHAM...He IS the son of George and Rebecca.which means i can give you two further generations before George...
George DID marry Rebecca Drabble 30.08.1791.....at Eyam..but he came from Hope to do it....which is a common factore in most of my work on here....the spouse finds his girl maybe a few villages away.and almost always marries her in her home village..so we have a definite match george of Hope married Rebecca of Eyam
He then took her back with him to Hope...and they lived at GRINDLOW next village to Little Hucklow.
So even me with my pedantic correctness,am happy you have the right William and the right George.

George and rebecca had the following children,,registered baptisma at Tideswell..
William 17.07.1796
Robert 13.05.1798
Samuel 30.12.1804
Peter 30.04.1806

Get back to you in a mo with George's pedigree.......

Derek
