Hi Derek, My greatgrandfather, George Graham, Is listed in the 1881 census as having been born in 1837 in Derby But I have hit a brick wall in trying to find his birth cert., etc. He married Maria Smith & the whole family settled in Middlesbrough. He & his sons were boilermakers/

Rachel Report 25 Feb 2010 04:45

thats great thanks. The children were Joseph b1887, John William b 1889..Agnes c1887 Grace 1891, Elizabeth 1893 and Eva 1898. I think the younger girls may have been put in a workhouse? By the 1901 census Catherine was with her new family! Margerison is sometimes misspelt Margison on the records I gather? I would really like to trace these relatives and know what became of them after their mother left. :( Also if you come accross any Lister or Longleys they may well be Catherine Lister's relatives as seamingly Beard and Bridge and Bancroft names are linked through marriage, wich is how i guess they came to be in Glossop from Sheffield?

thanks for that

Hi Derek

Yes i thought that it would be a long shot being on the borders of three counties. I am very grateful for any help you can provide though. Having said that I wouldn't want you to be wasting energy on descendants of George Copestake b1796 as I am pretty sure I have identified most of these. I think his wife was Sarah Pratt from Swepstone in Leicestershire. I am really looking for his ancestors, I think his father was Joseph Copestake b1771 also Chilcote married to Martha Hinksb c1771 Austrrey Warwicks and Francis Brady. I am trying to find Josephs Father to see if I can link my Copestake tree with any other nearby Copestakes via Josephs Uncles etc.
Just wondered if you had anything from other records other than Census which I think I have searched pretty comprehensively (although could be wrong).
Any help is most gratefully recieved.
Thank You
Paul

Hello Cowslip..I didn't forget you.......bit difficult this one, becasue Chilcote Derbys is a chapelry in the parish of Clifton-Campville in Staffs....it's all very close to the border between the two

I know George Copestake born 1796 married a Sarah....14 years older than he was..and had two children George 1824 and Joseph 1828..both born in Netherseal....but its down as Seal in leicestershire (Sarah came frrom lecicestershire)...and in 1871 there is a grandson George born 1857..no further details right now..but I'll look further into it.

Hi Derek, have been searching around and you'll never guess what I found. A will for a Samuel Gerrard, but unfortunately it's not good news. Will try and cut and paste - it is of your Mary Gerrard, that we thought my Samuel could be a son of, however, that is not to be. Seems Mary was married to a Samuel, not a Joseph, and there is not a son named Samuel. The mystery continues!!!!

This is the last Will and Testament of Samuel Gerrard of Bradbourne

Proven 18/4/1835 of Bradbourne Mill.

The Last Will and Testament of Samuel Gerrard of Bradbourne, Proven 18/4/1835.

This is the last Will and Testament of me Samuel Gerrard of Bradbourne in the County of Derby Miller and Farmer. First I will and direct that all my past debts funeral and testamentary expenses be fully paid satisfied and discharged by my Executrix and Executor hence after named, I give and bequeath to my Wife Mary Gerrard all my stock in trade also all my farming stock both live and dead all my household furniture, dairying and brewing utensils, plate, linen, glass, china and all other effects that I stand possessed of at the time of my decease, together with all my monies and securities for money, whatsoever and whosesoever, and in whosoevers hands the same may be placed during the term of her natural life if she shall so long continue my Widow, but if aforesaid wife Mary Gerrard shall not continue my Widow, then at the time of her marrying again I give and bequeath all my before mentioned property to my several children (Viz) John Gerrard, Elizabeth Gerrard, Joseph Gerrard, Mary Gerrard and Judith Gerrard share and share alike but if she shall continue my Widow during the term of her natural life then after her decease all I bequeathed to her I give and bequeath to my before mentioned children to be divided amongst them as she and my executor herein after named may think proper. And lastly I do nominate constitute and appoint my aforesaid Wife Mary Gerrard and Joseph Johnson of Sitterlow in the Parish of Parwich in the County of Derby Farmer Executrix and Executor of this my last Will and Testament, And I do hereby utterly disalow, revoke and disanul, all and every other former Testaments, Wills, Legacies bequests, and Executors by me in anywise before named, Willed, and bequeathed, ratifying and conforming this and no other, to be my last Will and Testament in Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty eight day of January in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Thirty Five.

Signed Samuel Gerrard

Bursaned Report 1 Feb 2010 20:23

Thanks Derek, I haven't done much research, other than the basic, on the Blackwells, as Sarah Ann Gerrard married Samuel Blackwell after the birth of the three children that forms my tree. But I appreciate you still hanging in there!!! Hope Nina can obtain some info here as well.

Also, was just working away here and realized something mind boggling! After double checking the info that my cousin gave me from his family bible .... it cannot be correct!

And probably because they were trying to cover the fact that three children were born out of wedlock.

Wilfred's dates are correct, and then the arrow goes up to Samuel, but his DOB is stated as June 1867!!!! Then up to Joseph who supposedly dies in 1887. But from all my research, this can't be correct. I believe they've fudged the dates, and put in a later made-up date for Samuel (instead of 1822) to make up for the fact that Wilfred and his siblings don't have a father!!!!!!

Wow, the deceit that went on ... and in a bible no lessI So Samuel's father may or may not be Joseph then....

*&(^&%&** .... sorry,
Diane

Hi Diane..just in case you're interested i have acquired a very nice print-out of the PARWICH Censuses from 1841-1901..makes very interesting reading for students of the Blackwells......

Can't remember if i sent you this before but here goes.

A couple of Memorial Inscriptions at Parwich Graveyard

WILLIAM GERRARD 30.01.1888 aged 95
and his wife ELLEN 25.01.1883 aged 80

RICHARD BLACKWELL 21.11.1925 aged 84

and his wife ELIZABETH 30.10.1918
WILLIAM there son 24.02.1885 and ABEL their son 21.01.1897 aged 7

One of the families of Blackwells everpresent in most of the Censuses

ABRAHAM and his family are the other Derek

Hi Derek, have finally had some time to "play". Found a Joseph Gerrard in Brailsford on the 41 census. He's aged 55 and is a miller. That info and also a found death date of 1846, fit into your scenario. Wonder if that's why he was not "home" then with Mary and family in 41.. The death would also fit into the census info you found of Mary being a widow in 51. But try as I might, I cannot come up with a marriage for these two, nor proof of Samuel being a part of the family. I'm wondering if the bible death date was for the son Joseph, b 1820? Will research more tomorrow .... going off to bed ... the eyes are crossing!!

Derek thanks a million for that info, you have just reminded me to look through my paperwork and I've found a copy death cert for a Frances Chapman (sent by somebody who had got wrong one) it shows that the death was registered by Robt J Barradell Master of Chesterfield Union Workhouse, shows Frances Chapman was charwoman of Eckington age 71, cant make out cause of death looks like Sene ***. Almost certainly my Grt Grt Grandmother.
Cant believe I've had this in my file since 2005 dohhh.

Any further info you may find will be appreciated.

Thank you a blue peter badge for you.

Frances x

PS I do have marriage cert. for William and Frances at Parish Church Ecclesfield 1845 and 1851 census shows son James born in Manchester and they obviously moved back over the hills.
James must have moved back to Manchester because in 1869 he marries a Sarah Ann Peake and is in Ancoats, never been able to find him on 1871 census though oops sorry this is becoming a tome.

Derek Report 31 Jan 2010 13:55

Hello Frances...this has been a bit difficult because I don't have the burial records beyond 1860. However, I do visit Matlock Records Office quite frequently, and am due a visit.

I am almost certain they were buried at ECKINGTON near Chesterfield becasue that is whre they were living in 1891.

Was made a little difficult becasue they are both from areas of Sheffield in South Yorkshire..for which i don't have any records....

Until shortly after 1871 they were living in Ecclesfield Sheffield with teo children JAMES b 1850 and EMILY b 1856..there was another child born 1848 FANNY E who does not appear to have survived very long.

By 1881 they are at White Lane Eckington Chesterfield, and still there 1891.
William was a 2Knife cutter"

That's all i can tell you right now..but will get back to you.

All the best Derek
