The Family Tree Forum is now 2 years old. Who would have believed it would have developed so much!

Anyway, for those who know it and those you are new to family research, do check out the brilliant free monthly magazine which may help with your own research and which you may be able to contribute to in the future

Well Cathy, 2 years ago I think me and about 20 odd others sat over there saying wonder how many members we will get - I think theres getting on for 5000 now?

It is a lovely site, never any aggro and people always more than happy to help new members. And its always developing something new to help people and also everyone is invited to get involved in local projects for the benefit of everyone. I think one of the great things is the ability to add photos and illustrations.

And of course, its free.

You wouldn't be refering to screenshot guides to FTM, PAF, Census searches, Certificates, Searching the BMD and all the pictures of the churches and chapels that folks can use and contribute too would you H?

Oh and adding the bit of a cert with the names you can't quite read for others to guess at.............i mean help with, yeah that's what i meant........help with.

Yes i am a member, but i must admit i do not go to it very often, sometimes i seem to have difficulty navigating it, but i do keep trying. Its probably me not the site, and i should make a greater effort to read the advice "How to use" info.
I do think there are many features that are brilliant love the photo restoration that people do on behalf of the members, now you have raised it i must keep trying,i'm sure i will master my own inability, and getting it all into my limited brainpower

The Family Tree Forum is brilliant!

Loads of good advice and a wealth of vital information.

I too joined, because I know that their members have a huge amount of experience...which we all miss on here, I might add. (I'm not putting down anybody on here..loads of great people on here too.)

Only the other week one of their members gave me a great lead in tracing my second cousin's Irish parentage by locating an 'archived' message posted on Ancestry. I have since found the person who posted the message and we have been in contact.

I LOVE that feature on FTF Glen!

I put up a faint, scrawled section of a Scottish marriage cert for help with a mother's maiden name which, as far as I was concerned, was completely indecipherable. From the variety of opinions, cross-referenced to the IGI, I was able to establish the name was Feehile and pin the family origins down to Leitrim, Ireland. This then meant I could go on to the IFHF site and find two more generations - making my 92 year-old aunt's day in the process!

The only bad thing about it that members post questions and help requests on both boards at the same time instead of waiting to see if their problem gets answered on one of the boards first.

The number of times I have spent time typing a reply to a question only to see that it's already been asked and answered on the other side does make it annoying when you spend time trying to help only to discover it's already been sorted.

Rant over back to work.

I reckon i'm getting the hang of posting images into a thread now, after adding 300+ i would hope so anyway!!
Having added several screenshot guides and visual guides both to the boards and the wiki i hope folks find them useful and informative.

Heaven knows how many images are displayed in the Places Of Worship project now, it must run into the thousands.

Are you talking about the Computer board Ron and the Family Tree Program help?

I often think perhaps the computer board could be amalgamated.

Well I certainly do Glen!

Only today, I was comparing your images on there of local office v GRO certs.

And I've been delighted to find photos of so many of my English churches there already! I'm now barely containing my impatience as more of the Scottish ones are beginning to arrive - so keep cracking that whip (although I'm not sure it goes well with the tinsel!)

I keep checking the Gedcom name database but if i remember rightly i am a bit far from your lot.

and the lovely Scottish weather isn't helping with the pics either, too flippy wet.

JustGillian

JustGillian Report 9 Sep 2008 17:21

lol Glen - yes, you are unfortunately! Mine are Lanark, Stirling, Fife and Clacks.

I've got my eye on someone who is creeping gradually closer to Stirling!

And you've reminded me of another feature I LOVE on FTF - the gedcom names database. There's none of this faffing around with open/don't open your tree - it can all be sorted by messaging, as with the Ancestry and TribalPages private trees.

Both really Heather.

It depends on what questions are asked and where but some posters stick the question not only on different boards of the same site but also on different boards on both GR and FT Forum.

It's very annoying and a complete waste of the helpers time to spend time answering a question when it's already been answered elsewhere.

Appreciate that Ron.

Have to say Im a bit guilty on the computer board front as some days messages go unanswered so I bung my query elsewhere.

You obviously do not know me like the rest of the subscribers do Julie.

I have been a member on here for a few years and I consider myself very knowledgeable on FH and know quite a bit about computers and family history software.

I answer help questions on these boards every day.

It was NOT a pop at you in fact I don't even recognise your name.

It was intended as a general constructive critisism and I am very much offended by your statement.
