Mary Ann Cummings/Commins married George Beer in 1867. Therefore Jessie Beer is Mary Anns daughter not Marias daughter.

Margaret I think your right & Maria & MaryAnn are actually sisters.

What a complicated family!

Battenburg Report 11 Aug 2008 01:08

Claire.
I agree the marriage of Samuel Plumb would be the best to start with as this is something known ( hopefully)

I thought Maria was a Cumming daughter of Samuel. Found in 1881 with father Samuel and in 1851 with Samuel and mother Elizabeth.
Maria not transcribed in 1851but on the census image she is there.
The Mary Ann Cumming you found in 1851 could be Maria.s older sister. If Maria was born a Cumming then she couldnt have married one

Geoffery Dennis Report 10 Aug 2008 20:05

So are you actually saying that Maria had possibly 3 marriages/relationships and within that she went back to her single name, I didn't know it would make a difference for her to get a job with!
So some of the info. I did have that I thought was wrong just needed a bit more unravelling not binning, ie. the info. on Maria and the Plumb boys on the Census is actually right just a bit confusing and she was listed with Green but just not sure of a marriage, but she did have the child by him is that right to double check?
The marriage of Maria to John Plumb will be my new starting point I hope and I have a couple of certs. now on order.
Thankyou all very much for the time and effort you've put into this I do really appreciate it, it's helped clear it up a bit more thanks again for the push.

Eileen

Eileen Report 10 Aug 2008 16:20

As far as I can make out Maria's name was Cummings, but say that with a Devon accent and it could be anything. The only time I can find her with her parents is in 1881 ,then father is a widow. However in 1871 he has a wife called Elizabeth who comes from Bovey Tracey.(the grandaughter Jessie Beer is with them to confirm)Probably Samuel Cummings married Eliza Jones in Exeter OND 1852 5b/195. IGI have an Elizabeth Furactt(/Fawcett) Jones christened 18/6/1811 in Bovey Trecey which ties up with her age.
This still leaves the "problem of Maria"!!
She is not at home in 1871 when she should be,but there is an eliza of the right age.....so,perhaps she didn't like her name.
See if you can turn anything up on free bms by using the phonetic search. Registrars weren't too hot on regional accents. Nor were the clergy.

Sorry I haven't replied!
I can't seem to find any connections from my grandad and his brothers to the info. there always seems to be something ie. the area of birth, the date etc. I have looked through BMD and Found his marriage to my nan, and looking on the census the connection starts to go sketchy with the mum and her seemingly marrying again to Mr Green, I can't pinpoint too much before that ie. her first marriage to what I assume would bw my grandads father, (that is the only point I can make Maria a Plumb) from a first marriage. Could they have not been officially married or would that have been too frowned upon, just don't get it and the worse thing is both my older brothers have unfortunately died and they could have been more of a help being that much older, but still that's the way it goes.

Thanks for the info. given, most of it is the same as the info. we found out!
We did find the info. with the Devon connection and didn't know it was mistranscribed because we did find it hard to connect and match anything up, total confussion!
Thanks again

Battenburg Report 9 Aug 2008 12:50

The family are mistranscribed in 1881. The correct name is Cumming. Check the 1871 census for Samuel (head) 1819 Bishop Teignton occ gardener
Maria is working as a servant and not with her family
