Glen, Im feeling the same as you and Glitter. Perhaps we make it seem too easy sometimes? But Im sure like me, you sweat away on some queries, rushing to answer the phone and so on in between, leaving the work you are supposed to be doing - excitedly you add it to the thread and then the person doesnt even seem pleased that you have managed to break down their "brick wall" against all odds. Its an "Oh right" if that - Ive had so many recently where they arent even acknowledged!

And talking of "brick walls" I shall scream if I see that in a heading again when it is usually a really simple query that could be crushed by simply using freebmd or buying a cert.

Have to agree with you there Heather regarding the use or misappropriation of the term "brickwall".......aaaaaarrrrrrrrgghhhhhhh.

Perhaps we could introduce the term "picket fence" as a way of encouraging people not to be quite so dramatic!

I've just been browsing through the Tips Board and I think we are going to have to BAN the use of the term "brick wall"....it's getting ridiculous.

Ah brick walls................

My birth father was a bit of a ladies man (polite description).

I know he had one legitimate daughter and have found a further 13 kids (including me) born to him with various women around England.

I have met one of them, spoken to another 10 so have just two to trace. Oh and one of them was born a boy and had the operation, now if i can trace that lot including a half sister who was born a half brother what exactly constitutes a brickwall???

Oh and birth father had a habit of using his mothers maiden name and claiming he was married when the situation arose but i still know when he did/didn't and was allegedly married.

Cynthia, no I think there must be an EU standard for a "brick wall" and 90% of those claimed to be on here are not genuine. :)

I'm glad others are having a moan - I thought it was just me getting fed up with the lack of manners and that I was turning into a grumpy old woman.

When someone doesn't return to their thread after a while, I tend to send them a short PM, just to say that they have had some 'interesting' replies and it might be worth them going back to their thread.
Sometimes they come back pretty quickly.

Also when a lot of work has been done by members and no thanks are forthcoming, I put a little comment on like 'you're welcome'.

Very silly of me to do that, but it is so frustrating!

If you have never posted on this board before, I hope this will help you. I haven't been around here that long but the researchers are excellent and I have picked up a few tips:

Always print your request simply and plainly (with punctuation).
They need names, dates of birth/marriage etc. addresses or localities and be specific with your question as they are not mind readers.

Stay near your computer after you have posted your request as some can get back to you very quickly.

If you get a reply, click on 'add' and respond. Always remember to thank them for their efforts, as that is common courtesy.

If you can't check for a while, come back onto this page and on the left you will see the man in the top hat. Under him you will see 'my threads'. Click on that and your headline will be shown and you can see if anyone has answered you. Clicking on that link will open up your question for you.

Never be afraid to ask if you don't know what to do next or how to use the site. Someone will generally help you out.

If you see a request that you think you can help out with, always look at the date that the request was posted. Some of them are old and the person who put the request on may not be checking or have forgotten. Send them a private message by clicking on their underscored name.

This is not a comprehensive list by any means - as I said, I am still learning - but I hope it helps someone.

Yes, I would like to nudge up to the top again too! I have only been using these posts for a few weeks now but that have been fanastic. Some people on here have been so kind, caring and helpful with my requests, it has opened up new avenues and broken down some brick walls.

Thank you Cynthia for your advice as I now see I can look back over my threads - something new I have learn't today!

Selena, you are like me, I pm and wait for response, I replied to a thread on 21 July ( not that long ago) posting a possible second marriage for some-one, there was one posted, BUT there was also a second that could have been the one she was looking for instead. No reply since on thread and no reply to pm either.

Excuse me but I have probably missed the point. Please, please,everyone, don't get too shirty with each other. I am the world's worst at getting shirty, so I should keep my thoughts to myself. We are all trying to find people, we don't always thank those who help, sometimes with me, I forget who has heped me, I am not well organised, so I forget who to thank. Just to say anyone who has ever helped me, THANKS. Not everyone is good at maneuvering around the site, and get things wrong. Syvia ....erm.... no he deffo isn't. its true. Glen found one of his birth sibs even though this sib had sex change - yes, it is true.
