Oh Jeannie
That looks like a good one! I will have to go and rummage in FreeBMD again.
I'm catching up with my friend tomorrow so will let her have all this info and will order the cert at the weekend to clarify mum's details. But it looks as if we can make some proper headway now.
Have to be off soon as OH needs computer and I said I'd only be another few minutes so will pop back either much later tonight or tomorrow (at work!),
Many thanks everyone - much appreciated.

Thank you Jeannie. I wonder if the family ended up being scattered to the winds after father died? Maybe some ended up in the workhouse? I will have to rummage using just initials!
Perhaps that's when the older ones moved to London?
At least with a few more names to search I've more of a chance of finding mum ...
Cheers

Comparing the children from both families with births on FreeBMD - there seem to be two Eskins families for that period. They don't all seem to be listed but the ones that are either fall into one or other of the families shown above. It's making much more sense now - thank you soooo much everyone.

I've searched for Rose and Alice Eskins on the 1891 without success. Also cannot find any deaths for thembetween 1881 and 1891, nor can I find a death or remarriage for the mother Ann. However, found Fanny Eskins as a servant so that doesn't help.

Sylvia - I'm fairly sure it's him. Odd that they're in Staunton in 1881 and the last 3 children born there and the enumerator is showing Staunton as Worcestershire. I think Newent is one of those "shifting" places ...

Hi Billy
Found him - he's with another family. The same quarter but different numbers so they can't be twins. But thank you - I remember when I first saw him thinking - yes! But, no. Thank you for looking.
Jeannie - that looks promising. And a good idea. I'll have a mooch around.
Chrisa - many thanks. It;s been driving me so mad I'm beginning to wonder whether I'd see her now even if she was staring me in the face! I think she may have been mistranscribed (particulary 1901) but to be mistranscribed twice seems a bit unfortunate! Thank you for helping.
Sylvia - that's the other family. Dad's occupation quite different so - what with the brith reg being a totally different number as well - I don't think it's him. But, that makes Chrisa's find even more relevant. 'Cos if Albert's father William is still alive in 1891 then the William who died in 1888 is more likely to be Olive's dad ... breakthrough maybe?
Thank you all - this is helping a lot!

Jill I'm looking for you but not having any more luck than you!
Just wanted to say i had a nightmare trying to find my great grandmother. Bought her marriage cert & found her there with her mother & stepfather. Went on searching for her & still couldn't find any trace of her even knowing both parents names & stepfathers name etc. Eventually when I received her her birth cert with address born at I did another address search & found her mother & father there but the fathers name was wrong!
It may be worth getting the birth cert as you say just to know her mothers name for searching.
I'll keep looking for you.
If i don't see anything tonight before i log off i'll check in again tomorrow.

Hi Jill
I've been looking too, without success.
However, I did find the death of a William Eskins in the same district
Deaths Mar 1888 (99%) ESKINS William 59 Newent 6a 198
Perhaps if we could find him on the 1881 census, we could see other members of the family and then work forward?
