The 1891 census has Agnes as a domestic servant and living away from home.
That census says she was born about 1875.

I notice that in the same building but as a different household is a single man of 37 called James Murphy who is a stevedore.

My guess (and no proof yet) is that could be one of Agnes's relations. He might be an uncle.

That would fit the grandfather's occupation in 1881.

At this stage all you can do is keep gathering information until you have enough evidence to make any scenario likely or even with luck prove something.

Just read this thread - fascinating!

It prompted me to compare the 1901 search on home page of GR for 1901 with the National Archives version (previously I googled for 1901 census). I had read somewhere that GR had bought the rights to the 1901 census, and the transcription is the same on both sites.

Interestingly there is a beta version offered - see

and when you have a list of possibles (eg all the Wal* Deer* entries), you can click on "show the results in map view", which looks very helpful ...

- I probably missed others talking about it when it first appeared!

[Edit: looking at the image, you can see why Ancestry had it as Derring and National Archives as Deiring. Even so, I'd say that Deering is more likely to be what the enumerator actually wrote]

I have just found them using "Deiring" which is a spelling I'd never thought of!!

It also seems to show that GR must use different indexes if Ancestry show this name as Derring and GR show it as Deiring.

If my hunch is right and that Thomas and Mary Fitzgerald are Agnes Fitzgerald's parents then you may not be able to get much further back.

Although their younger children were born in Mile End or St Georges East (which makes me think they are Agnes's lot) I spot their oldest child with them in 1881 is a Margaret born in Ireland.

This makes me think Thomas and Mary were probably married somewhere in Ireland.

Irish records are notoriously difficult to research but if that 7 year old with grandparents is the right Agnes then you'd know Mary was probably originally Murphy (if she is the right wife of Thomas).

I looked at the Free BMD site for births but there are quite a number of Agnes Fitzgeralds registered in the London area roughly around when yours was born. Not easy to pin them down.

Thank you Claire, I could find him and have a copy of their entry. Henry aged 3 months was my Grandad.

I'm not sure to trust GR's info now though and don't know where to go with this problem from here. Although I'll join Ancestry, I'm supposed to have unlimited access here until Nov!!

Look for the 1901 James born in Exeter & married to Caroline.

I just looked at the 1881 census

I think this may be Agnes staying with grandparents. This one is slightly older than expected but often 21 on a marriage certificate means over 21.

Note grandparents born in Ireland and surname Murphy so those would be maternal grandparents.

I then hunted for a Thomas Fitzgerald living in London and spotted a young one also born in St Georges East. I thought he might be a brother so looked at the household. That made me wonder if the family could be Agnes's

I don't know why I subscribed to the full GR. I guess I thought all the searches would be the same...
