I guess a lot of blanks will be filled in too (with ink!).

Not even as long as that, I believe the next census is to be published next year, or at least some of the information from it, if I have heard correctly.
I guess everyone on here is looking forward to that happening

I suppose if I have to patience, I really only have to wait another 3? years before the next census is published and I can find out for sure from that?

It's very early days Tracey and in this hobby you have to learn to be very patient.

When you learn the names of your great grandfathers that should be a double check for the births of your grandparents. You will then be able to find your great grandmothers.

With luck one or two of the lines will prove easier going.

Thank you all for your kind words, I really should have done a little research on how to do all this, but after reading all I could on the websites, my mind was a blur, so I thought just jump in and have a go. It's not as easy as people make out, and like Sue says, it takes time and I am the most impatient person there is! I really must learn to slow down and work methodically. I'm sure, once I get my first certificate I shall see things moving and then I can check and double check my findings without having to upset people by asking all the time. Sorry to be a pain.

Don't give up Tracey, the results can be really worthwhile and very rewarding.
I started with nothing apart from my wife's father's name (It's my wife's family tree I am researching) and now I have well over 500 names on the tree in quite a short time, all fully researched and confirmed by myself. Sometimes I hit a brick wall and come to a complete standstill for a while, but then things start moving again.
We have been in touch with relatives that we didn't know existed before starting this, and now glad we carried on.
This really is a most rewarding hobby

Thanks Sue, I have bits of paper all over my desk of all the information I have copied that people have helped me with, this particular time of asking for help is about a sibling of my grandmother, as the dates I had found didnt tally. Reggie has very kindly put me in the right direction of that one, and I was just asking him how he obtained his information so fast? Nothing I have mentioned tonight I have asked before, so as not to waste anybody's time. My requests for help, I can assure you are very genuine, and I didnt want to upset anyone.

When the marriage certificate arrives you will have both the fathers (with luck).

That should help double check the next generation going backwards.

This hobby isn't a fast one to do. Some lines are easier than others.

I'm trying to work back from one ancestor who very helpfully under his father's name on his marriage certificate just said Dead.

I already had the names and dates of both my grandparents, birth dates, death dates and their marriage. I am currently awaiting delivery of their marriage certificate (hopefully tomorrow), but where to go then I am only guessing. I havent even been at this for a week yet, and I am almost ready to give up as (even with help from very kind people as yourself), I'm hopeless at this.

I've just nudged up your previous thread Tracey as some of the findings on there may be relevant and I'd hate anyone to spend time looking things up twice.

You need to start with what you KNOW.............your father's name.

Do you have his birth cert?

When was he born?

What were the names of his parents?

Look for their marriage............get the cert.

It will tell you their ages at the time, plus the names and occupations of each of their fathers.

You could also look for the marriage of the aunt...it would tell you her correct first name.

I am so confused now (it doesnt take much). All the stuff that I have spent hours on may all be wrong as I am not sure of Ethel Irene either. I probably have the wrong family altogether. Dad remembers and Auntie Rene, and she married a Sleet and had a cafe in Kidderminster.

What positive proof can I go on?

For bmd up to about 1920, just enter the name in the main search box..............don't use the qtr by qtr search of images............

For events after 1911, enter the full first forename, plus initials only for any other forenames......

The probability is that Ernest (1907) was a brother, in view of the fact that his birth was registered in the same district as the elder sister..........assuming, of course, that she is definitely Flo's sister.

If Ernest died before your father was born, there is still quite a time-span to cover...........

Well I have subsribed to ancestry too, but I have been going through each and every record of each quarter to find what I think I need.

I have literally gone through 20 years x 4 quarters plus for one piece of info, and I still havent found it.

And also, how did you get that information without names? I am in awe.

I also have a brothers name missing on my grandfathers side too, and I havent a clue how to find him.

I got all the info from the transcribed records on Ancestry....they are taken from freebmd.

So, looking at freebmd will give you the same results...........I just happen to prefer the search facility on Ancestry - probably because I'm used to it.
