Thank you Johnathon, I was afraid of that. I guess I will have to wait for another 3 day free trial, or until I dont have so much on my mind, and take up the 14 day trial and remember to cancel before the 14 days are up. As a superannuitant I dont want to spend a couple of hundred NZ dollars on trying to correct other people's errors.

surely after a month,s trialyou should be able to decide for yourself if the site is worth the money.

I wouldn't be without Ancestry! But my recent annual subscription was £69.95!

Mine watched me scrolling through census records for hours one day and fidgeted all the time!

For several years my husband was having blood transfusions as cancer treatment and these were at least twice a month. We got into the habit of him dropping me off at the records office on his way to the hospital then collecting me at the end of the day. So I was doing at least 2 full days a month for about 8 years I think.
I just did a quick calculation and I think I must have spent over 1000 hours in that records office.

Some days I found nothing useful at all and other times I was luckier.

I kept a note book and pencil (you can't use pen) and would try to make a plan of what I was going to do each time.

I used to meet people there and chat over our packed lunches. Sometimes they were people using their annual holiday of a week or so to spend it in a records office in an area they didn't live. They had to be especially careful to decide in advance what they needed to look up.

i have signed up to a free trail and will see how useful it is, then i may carry on with the 9.95 for a bit.am planning a trip to the local records office, when i have decided who i need records off.

my lot are a bit of a pain, they either are all one name or have four christian names and go by which ever one suited at the time.

my dad only knew them by nick names i want to go back and throttle them.

i am looking forward to going to the records office and am dragging a reluctant oh with me.

I think it is going to depend on where your ancestors were.

Many of mine lived in Somerset like me so I did my research on them in the Local Records Office. That isn't expensive but takes a lot of time. I made copies of their parish record entries and other documents like wills. I also found them on the censuses there.

If you can't get to the right office there are still a lot of sites online and if you are lucky you can find a lot of information there.

Ancestry is great but I've tended to use the occasional free trials.

I started off down the library then took a free trail at home. Kept Ancetsry going for a while at £9.95 a month to see how much I used it & then upgraded to annual for £63.96.

thank you andy that explains that one then, why dont they just say that then.

so is the 9.95 just that every month or is there anything else hidden i should know about.

If I use Ancestry in our local library, will I be able to contact all the idiots who have my sister in their trees m to a man b in 1723? Or can I merely look up records?

The £6.66 is the monthly equivalent if you pay the annual sub of £79 in one go.

i have been trying to decide about ancestry, at the min i have been buying credits, can any one tell me if paying the 9.95 a month is any good, i checked earlier and it said 6.66 annual or 9.95 monthly, i have emailed them but not had a reply.

If you aren't sure whether it is worth it - you can normally get free access to Ancestry at your local library and e-mail yourself the images. The downside is you have to get to the library to do the lookups!

You could give them a ring before your month is up and see if you can get a reduction, quite often they will give 20% off which makes it just over £63, that's what I pid for mine.

I agree that ancestry is very useful, but I have found the 14 days better as I pay in small bits and then use it like mad! Also you can view lots of records for free until you have used up your images. Depends on how much money you can spare at any one time.
