Thanks Christine and Ozbird, the date I have been given for his birth is 5th march, so that sounds like it Ozbird, I still cant figure out why if he was born William why he would say Thomas on daughters BC, I think I will now look for a marriage of a William Prest to an Esther, because the 1 I found was a Thomas and Esther, maybe I have the wrong couple.

Thats them Margret, I have them on 1881 1891 1901, BUT dont know which name to look under for earlier census, I would like to pin it down if I can before I order more certs, because as I said I got 2 marriage certs of the wrong William.

Its funny he seems to call himself Thomas on offical BC of daughter, but William on census.

I think I need to get a BC for 1 of the other children to see what it says, what do you think ??.

Thanks

Do you know when he died?.
I had the same problem locating a relative. She was Ann at her marriage. Annie on the census.

Only when I was contacted by a direct relative I found her real name was Phoebe Ann. She had her birth and death certs.

I have a gt gt uncle Reubin Thomas, also called Thomas Rubin or just Thomas or just Ruebin (spelt different ways). He had a brother Charles whose 2nd name was, I think Henry. His names were also interchangeable. Most frustrating.
Beware of ages on census, some people lied. My step-gtgtgrandfather was younger than my gtgt grandmother when they married but on the 1851 census taken 15 yrs later he is older. I know he was younger as the marriage in the parish reg says he was a minor, with the consent of his mother and I have found what I believe to be his bapt which agrees with the 'minor'.
Also, if it is a transcript of a census, some ages are difficult to decipher, so could be mistranscribed.
Huia.

As if this tracking them down wasnt difficult enough Julie, without them swapping names LOL

Sandra

Sandra Report 14 Apr 2008 19:20

He is known as William on 1881, 1891 and 1901, I haven't managed to tie him down on earlier census, what is consistent is he is born in Ripon Yorkshire.

On his son Thomas's MC in 1900 he is called William.

I just cant fathom it out.

Yes Chris the childrens birth and the parents are all in the bible, I have only sent for 1 BC up to now, Jane's and that is correct date, but says father Thomas Prest.

Marriage I found on BDM, and Esthers christening on IGI is right.

Second cousin said there is something written under the 1836 birth for William.

Quote "A second cousin who has a family bible says William Prest was born 5/3/1836, but on census he is same age as wife b. 1846."

So does the marriage details and children's dates of birth come from the bible?

Is the bible the original dating from that time?
Unless the bible was actually written at the time of the event then it is open to error.
Sometimes details would be written up from memory many years after and we all know how a memory can play tricks!

Entries in family bibles were also often copied into new bibles to be given to a daughter on marriage and mistranscriptions occur.

Not alot of help but some background info.

Is it usual to be called 1 christian name, but appear on the census as another ??

I have found my 2xGT. Grandfather WILLIAM PREST b. 1846, Ripon Wife ESTHER RAPER b. 1846 Carlton in Yorkshire on the 1881 and 1891 census in Durham, with children

Mary Ann Prest b. 27/9/1872

Thomas Prest b. 8/9/1875

Jane Prest b. 16/7/1881

William Prest b. 7/7/1889

I have just received BC for Jane, the trouble is it says her father is Thomas Prest, Mother Esther Raper

I found a marriage in 2nd qtr 1872, its Esther Raper with Thomas Prest.

A second cousin who has a family bible says William Prest was born 5/3/1836, but on census he is same age as wife b. 1846.

Now I dont know who I am looking for either a Thomas or a William.

To confuse it even more there is another William Prest b. 1836 in Yorkshire married to an Esther Allinson, but none of the children they have match mine on the census, I ordered this William's 2 marriage certs before I decided he was not the right one.

Can anyone help with suggestions.

Thanks in advance.
