So the birth was actually reg but the address did not exist ........ I am wondering why the police would have got in touch with the GRO, not wanting to jump the gun, but could a baby have been taken in the area, and they where looking for leads. |

If the police investigation resulted in a prosecution, there should be a write-up in the local paper, which you can find in the library of the area concerned. |

I think I would try Social Services. Tell them your husband thinks he had a brother who may have been adopted, and see if they can find any record in the area. |

Did your husband have any sisters? Perhaps the baby belonged to the sister but your husband's mother tried to pass the baby off as hers. |

There is a well known scam which features finding the identity of a child which has died, and setting up a false identity in that name, in order to facilitate a benefits fraud. |

True, but if you were using the identity of a deceased child, you wouldn't need to register a non-existent birth, would you? |

Have you tried looking to see if anything is in a local paper around that time? As it appears to be a strange story I feel sure it would have been reported in the papers. |
