Foundry Arms Public House. :~

Foundry Arms was not, as you would perhaps expect, in Foundry Square but a little further south along the west side of Belgrave Gate.
The beer house was roughly halfway between the Crown and Anchor and the Rutland Arms.
The Cox family kept the pub throughout much of the mid-Victorian period. Joseph and Anne Cox had previously run the Woodboy at Fleet Street. Following the death of her husband, Anne Cox remained as the licensee.
She was assisted by her eldest son Edward until he joined the Royal Marines. Her other son, Alfred, worked as a butcher. Anne Cox supplemented her income from the sales of beer by taking in lodgers.
The 1871 census records no less than eight lodgers living on the premises.

I’ve now located WOOD STREET
Which changed it’s name to Woodhouse Street.

It’s located on the left hand side of Belgrave Road.
The last street before Abbey Park Road
Opposite the old Belgrave Railway station.

Pack Horse Inn.

Northern Corner of Painter Street. ( next street down to Wood Street.)

Horse bandage manufacturer William Lowe was the licensed victualler in charge of the old Pack Horse Inn during the early 1870's.
The pub was on the western side of the road on the corner of Painter Street so there would have been some trade from the canal basin and the nearby cement works.
William and Ann Lowe remained at the Pack Horse into the 1890's.
They were succeeded by Richard and Emma Pick who had previously kept the Star and Garter on Wigston Magna's Leicester Road.

Did the list of pubs in Belgrave Gate come from one of your discs?

Do you know anything about the Foundry Arms in Belgrave Gate? I've found a couple of unrelated people in my tree staying there at different times, and they both ended up in the workhouse, so I wondered if it was some kind of cheap lodging-house for down-and-outs.

Ah, well done, I think I've got it. It never occurred to me that Bell Graves might be Belgrave :-)

I think "Garage" is unlikely in 1812, and the "gar" is between two lines, and possibly chopped off at the end.

Looking at it again, I think it must be

Wood(boy) Street,
Near the Red Lion,
Down Bell Grave Gate
Leicester.

Do you know if there is/was a Red Lion in the area?

To go back to John Pool and Rebecca Fowkes, is there any sign of a baptism for them on your discs? Can't find them on the IGI.

John was presumably baptised in Nailstone, Ibstock or Barlestone, and Rebecca in Elmesthorpe or somewhere in the Earl Shilton area.

There's a burial on the County disc for a John Pool aged 84 in Earl Shilton in 1825, which would make him born c. 1741 if it's the same person. Can't find a burial for Rebecca.

There's also an address I can't read on one of the apprenticeship documents, dated 1812 - I wonder if you have any suggestions?

The only Wood Street I can see on the map is in Earl Shilton, but John's son Richard Pool always lived in Leicester from about 1802 as far as I know. From 1841 he was in Bedford Street.

& the History Society is a comprehensive list of the INDEX Ref. No’s
With just a brief description. ( as per my last post )
To the original documents held in the strong room at the Records Office.

It also has INDEX ref No's to Bastardy Orders along with Settlement Orders.

It certainly cuts the trawling through endless Films & Books in the hope of finding anything………….

As I understand the system it does something like this……..

Person is claiming Parish relief …….Then abuses the system by increasing his family….or misbehaves…or refuses to work
So more money to be paid out from the Parish chest.

They are sent back to the Parish they were born in ( Removal Order )

This is where the “ Settlement order “ comes in….Is bound over to behave or they are out on their ears. ……….

Ooh, that's brilliant, Mike!

That Poor Law disc is very interesting - does it contain copies or transcripts of the actual documents, or can I get them from the Record Office?

When I was there in September I had a look in the Poor Law section, but all I found was a settlement order for John Pool's oldest son Richard (the one you found baptised in Ibstock in 1776) and an apprenticeship for Richard's son William in 1812.

I'm surprised there isn't a settlement order for John, who seems to have moved between Ibstock, Nailstone and Barlestone. Were settlement orders only made when people were claiming parish relief, or for anyone who changed parish?

Do you have any discs covering Ibstock or Nailstone, Mike?

I'm looking for the marriage of John Pool(e) and Rebecca (unknown).

They had 6 children between 1776 and 1785, the first 3 baptised in Ibstock and the others baptised in Nailstone, so I assume they were married around 1775.

I can't find a marriage on the IGI, and I can't find them on the 1841 census.

According to their eldest son's Settlement Order, John was living in Ibstock but legally settled in Nailstone in 1776 (which I assume means he was born in Nailstone).

This depends on how helpful the Parish Clark / Minister was.
If there was a Service of Thanks Giving for the deceased before the committal
Then I’ve seen this recorded in the Parish Burial registers with a comment some where in the entry that the deceased was buried Else where.
If you look on the County burials Disk you have for Loughborough you will see
Several entries for the same person in both the Crematory and the Parish Registers.
