thought i'd just mention that i was also told by my mother via her mother, that my grandmother's brother was missing in anction during ww1, however, i was still able to find his memorial on CWGC |

Just to clarify the position re "Unknown Soldier". His body may never have been recovered due to the horrific conditions at the front. Or perhaps his body was recovered but not identified and so buried in a CWGC grave marked "Unknown Soldier" etc. However, the CWGC is required to commemorate all the dead by name and so if he was never identified then his name will appear on one of the memorials to the missing in France or Belgium and also be listed on the CWGC website. |

I think you should examine the info your Gran gave you. If he was born in 1889 he would have been 23 in 1912/13 so he didn't die age 23. |

You could try contacting the Red Cross, which keeps the files of soldiers missing in action. |

Census age are just an approximate as they didn't ask the dob just the age. |

On the census , James is born 1890 and I found on the freebmd .. he was born dec 1889 , his bro Joe was born sept 1890 |
