I have found several references to 'optician and nautical instrument maker' as a profession.

I would certainly explore that one as a possibility !

Dea no offence taken, it was a figure of speech.

As for the opticians selling telescopes then that could make sense if he was the commercial traveller selling nautical instrument which I did find one William doing.

As for insulting me or me not caring well, neither is likely.

I'm an Aussie so it's just the way we come across. I care or I wouldn't be spending my time working on this. I love history and what's more interesting than your own family history.

Also just to let you know I'm female even though it's spelt the male way. I spell it with an 'E' because it looks more like a name and I like to be different.

Don't worry I'm not giving up on the tree, not yet anyway. When I have found that I can go no further then I might. It's half the reason I'm currently working and living in the UK.

Hi all,

The problem with the 'written word' is that it can be read in many different ways !

What I read in Gypsyjoe's message was an 'acceptance of defeat',

"Ahhh thanks guys................... Who knows.........."

yet he/she seems to have more information to be explored !

What my message was meant to say was that you can't just 'give up' on something so easily - you have to 'really care' about every little bit of research you are exploring and keep at it !

We were all here working on this and all willing to continue - In my (obviously very poor) way, I was trying to get him/her to want to do the same.

My final comment on there:

"If you DO - we are here to help!"

was, I thought, inviting him/her to continue working with us and give more information.

I hope this explanation has 'cleared up' this situation and I apologise if anyone has been upset.

Dea x

PS - I will send a PM to Gypsyjoe, with an apology as, I too would be upset to think that I had put anyone off from asking for help.

I had the same impression as Margaret as to Gypsy Joe's meaning and demeanour.

Didn't read it as him being flippant, Dea.

Hope that's not put him off returning to the thread.

Yes, I find sometimes if a person's age is in weeks, months or even days, it doesn't always make it onto the "transcribed" Ancestry search. But when I check the image, the age is usually there.

The image says she is 7 months. It's just the transcriber who has left the age off the transcription.

Best thing to do is to look at the orignal.
If you dont have access to Ancestry....put the details on here and someone will look for you....

Her name was Minnie Ellis on the 1881 census.

Parents are William and Ann.

Siblings are Annie, Harry, James, May, and William.

I'd have a look at other censuses but I can't get them to accept my Maestro card.

GypsyJoe Report 1 Mar 2008 16:02

Why would the age space on a census be left blank? Would the child in question just have been born. It was 1881.
