Hi

I am trying to find some information on my great grandfather and his mother. His name is James Hart. I have no idea when he was born or what is mothers first name was. I know that his daughter was born in 1922 in India. Her birth certificiate gives no additonal information that may help. My great grandfathers mother was not married so her surname was (assuming this is the case) also Hart. Please can anyone give some advice where to start looking for this needle in a haystack, or is it possibly easier than I think?!

What was James Hart's wife's name? If their daughter was born in india her mother's name should be on birth certificate? This could pin down his marriage and perhaps a location could come from that.

thanks for the info. Please can you let me know if there is anywhere that I can search that gives the mothers maiden name. As it was also Hart (?) this would I hope start to narrow it down a bit.

Thanks

Fiona,
however trivial it may seem, a little information can be the information needed to solve your problem.
Does the daughter's birth certificate give James's occupation ?
Was he a soldier ?
Does the birth certificate give an address in India or just India ?
What was his wife's maiden name and given name ?
Where did you find the information that James's mother was not married ?

good luck
Dave

Hi all

This is the information that I have on the birth certificate of James harts daughter.
Place of birth : British station hospital Kirkee(9 Oct 1922)
Name of child : Beryl Doris
name of Father: James Hart - serjeant raoc 7574710
mothers name : Lily Adeline Payton.
I have previously asked about my grandfather and thought he may be traceable via his army number but I have had no luck and was told that it looked like his number was too long.
My nan, who is Beryl Doris, has given me some info and let me know that her fathers mum was not married, she was in service somewhere. james Hart married in approx 1920 and i believe that he was in his early 20s at this time. If i search for john hart in the late 1890s there are loads of them so am not sure how best to narrow down my search, short of ordering a birth certificate for each and every one of them which would be expensive. I have no idea in what area he was born.
My nan knows no other information so i am feeling a little stuck. I am very new at this so may have missed something glaringly obvious.
Thanks for all suggestions, much appreciated.

Lily's birth reg'n.......

Name: Lily Adeline Payton
Year of Registration: 1899
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun

What you really need is the marriage cert.....it will tell you how old James was, and thus give you a better chance of finding him in earlier times.

Thanks for the help. Maybe I am missing something but if I know the year in which james Hart was born, how can I pinpoint him if the records that I can access online via ancestry do not give the maiden name of the mother?Like I say there are alot of James Hart s I have no idea in which part of the country he was born.

Thanks

Here is the info you need to order the marriage cert

JFM 1920

PAYTON, Lily A to HART

Worcester 6c/255

If you order on line from the GRO......making sure to 'check' the box which asks 'Are GRO refs known?'...it will cost you £7.00

If he was born before 1901 census, it should be possible to locate him on there..........

You won't know until you get the marriage cert. The names of the witnesses may also prove helpful............

He was a Sergeant in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps.

Perhaps you can find out through his army record.

This may be a red herring but the IGI has a submitted entry with a James Hart born
1898 in Stafford.

His parents are Abraham Hart and Elizabeth Ellis.
He may be worth making a note of just in case.

Does your grandmother remember how old she was when her father died?
If you can find his death cert that might give a little more information perhaps.

Just had a long chat with my grandmother and my greatgrandfathers life seems to be a complete mystery. He never mentioned his mother, my nan never knew her or met her. So I am wondering if perhaps he was put into some form of care when he was born. Is there anywhere that I can check this please.
I have sourced the marriage certificate and he was 22 at date of marriage which was Jan 1920. The witness to the marriage was his father in law. No fathers name is given.
I need to check army records and will do a search on death certificates, it is thought that he died in the late 60's (68,69 or 70) in harrowgate. But in the mean time if anyone knows if it is possible to check orphanages etc please can you let me know how/where to go about this.

Many thanks for all of your help.
