Find Ancestors

Hi Guys,

Been awhile.
Have come across these names as parents on a birth cert.
But I am unable to find any reference to them in the cenus records.
There is a marriage in the Free BDM.

Marriages Sep 1892
Wilson William W. Derby 8b 948
McCaskie Agnes W. Derby 8b 948

But the person in question was born in 1862.
Ok....they could have married later. But on the cert is states," Agnes Wilson, formerly McCaskie."
This would appear to mean they were married before the birth not in 1892....yet I can't find any reference to it anywhere.!
The person in question is a John Wilson born 1862 in Portsea, Portsmouth Hampshire.
Father William, was a Sapper Royal Enginners and a Shipwright.

John was a Carpenter Royal Navy, H.M.S Wye
But was aboard HMS Active at time of his marriage in 1892.

Its the military connection which is making it hard to track down William and Agnes in the cenus record.
I assume they may have moved around alot...but also..I do not know when and where William was born.

Any ideas or help is much appreciated.

The person on the birth cert is mentioned in the 1st post.

John Wilson born 1862 in Portsea, Portsmouth Hampshire.

My great grandparents married 14 years after my gran was born.

I know it does happen.
But on Johns cert it states( as in 1st post). ," Agnes Wilson, formerly McCaskie."

So it appears Agnes & William were married at the time of Johns birth.
But I cant find the marriage..or the family in the census records.
Thing is..John Wilson is like John Smith....there are lots of them..so maybe it is "cant see wood for the trees".

But I feel the military connection is whats causing the problem.
I assume they may have moved about alot...but I cant pin down any sign of them.

I dont know William or Agnes place or date of birth...

Hence request for help. :)

I dont believe the Agnes who married in 1892 is the Agnes I seek.
As according to Johns birth cert...It appears William & Agnes were married at the time of Johns birth in 1862.

John did indeed marry in 1892..to an Emma Tuck.
But I am seeking William and Agnes....John's family.

I do not know when or where either were born...as I cant find the family in the census's. I assume because of the military background..they moved alot....

On Johns birth cert.

Have you bought that marriage certificate to see the ages of William and Agnes?

I have an example in my own family where the child was born in 1901 and his mother is listed with him (at 2 days old) on the 1901 census using his father's surname. He was their only son and the parents didn't marry until 1925 although both were free to marry anytime!

If you haven't found the family on any census, how can you be sure you have the right birth cert? Are you taking John's DOB from his marriage cert? How do you know where he was born?

John Wilson born in Portsmouth 1862.
He married Emma Tuck in 1892.

Fathers name on marriage cert William Wilson.."Shipwright".

John Wilson born to William Wilson 1862, mother Agnes McCaskie
Father occupation "Sapper Royal Enginners"

Johns occupation on marriage cert Carpenters Mate, HMS Active.
Later hes aboard HMS Wye at the birth of his son.

I assume John worked with his father..certainly followed his father into the sevice.

Johns son...my grandfather..was a Lt. in the Navy.

I haven't just..... "Plucked this out of thin air"

Sometimes I feel I am getting the "3rd degree " here.

Boogie, I am sure you haven't "just plucked this out of thin air" but with such common names it is easy to go wrong and I am sorry if you think you are being interrogated but please remember, you know where you got your info from and we don't.

I have found a John Wilson in the 1881 with a father William who is a shipwright, as is John. Now, this could tie in with him joining the Navy as a carpenter. This John's age is a bit out and he wasn't born in Portsea which is why I wonder why you are so sure you have the right birth cert and age.

Was there any Navy number on his marriage cert? I have looked on the National Archives site RN online records and there does not appear to be a John (no second name) Wilson of the right age born in Portsea.

I guess I shouldnt of bothered asking...
This place never changes...

1891 John Wilson born about 1860 in liverpool.Carpenters mate on The Active (ship)
also on same census John Wilson born about 1860 in Plymouth he was a private.
1861 William Wilson a Shipwright born @ 1832 in liverpool single with parents William Wilson a shipwright born @ 1808 in Cumberland and wife Charlotte.
1871 William Wilson born @ 1832 a shipwright with wife esther,
John @ 1860,
David 1866 and Eliza 1868.
Could william have married Agnes and she died and he married Esther.
With them on 1871 census was George Walkington 1806 brother in law.

Lancashire BMDs 1892:

WILSON William MCCASKIE Agnes West Derby, Register Office or Registrar Attended Liverpool REG_WD/137/78

Boogie - send for this certificate. Better still, ring the Lancs Register Office and ask if they couple were in their 50s when they married. The office won't give you all the details but they might confirm the couple's approximate ages and then expect you to pay the £7 to get the certificate. Which is fair enough really. If they tell you that the couple are only in their 20s or 30s, you know you have the wrong pair, and they won't charge you anything. You really do need to know this, if only to eliminate them.

My g grandparents married 18 years after their first child was born. I can only guess that was cos my G grandfather was married and his wife was still alive (I know my g grandmother was a widow). I have never found the husband pre-2nd marriage. Try finding John Davies in North Wales!!!

EDIT Forget this idea, information has been superceded.

A set of my gr-grparents married several years after the birth of their last child, too. Also assume pre-existing marriage, had to be after 1837 (they were born c1825), but never found it. Thirty+ years seems a bit much though.

I do think the 1859 marriage in Scotland fits rather well, myself.
