I have agreed to help my friend discover her family tree but have come up against a real brick wall.

Valentine Unsworth married Mary Elizabeth Jones on 29 July 1899 at The Registry Office in the district of Prescot. His father's name was James and he was deceased at the time of the marriage. His address at the time of marriage was 26 Booth Street, St Helens, Lancashire

It says his relationship to head is grandson but Ellen is a boarder surely it would have said daughter, Jane Unsworth 5 is given as daughter and John 2 is given as grandson which makes me wonder whether John and Valentine are Ellen's grandsons

I am trying to find Valentine's birth and death registrations. I think he died in St Helens area

Thanks PollyPoppet. Interestingly he gives his place of birth as St Helens when in 1881 it is Hindley.

On 1911 census he gives his place of birth as Bolton.

Just been looking in 1891 for the family. Don't know if you already have this

Thanks Andrew, I had been unable to find Valentine Unsworth on 1891. Ages and siblings match. Surname doesn't but having said that one of my ancestors had a complete name change in the census records when his mother remarried. So this may be a possibility and a good lead.

I was intrigued by Ellen being described as Boarder on the 1881 Census

I do wonder as to whether or not she was part of the Hughes family. I have search BMD's on Ancestry, FreeBMD and LancashireBMD sites. I have only found one that comes close to a birth registration for a Valentine Unsworth in Hindley but his name is Frederick Valentine Unsworth and the registration in for 1894 which is 14/15 years out.

Hello, I'm actually looking for the date of birth of Valentine's brother, John who was born in Daubhill in 1879 and I was hoping that Valentine being a more unusual name than John might hold the key.

According to the 1939 Register Valentine's date of birth was shown as 7th April 1880 so I sent for his birth certificate hoping to discover his, and John's, mother's name.

I received a reply back stating that they could find no record of his birth in Hindley/St Helens/Bolton for the years 1879-81.

I have their details on the 1881, 1891, 1901 and 1911 Censuses and Valentine's marriage in 1899 and his death in 1959 but no verification of his birth!

Have you had any more luck yet, please?

He could have given his father as james as that was his stepdad
