The only way to find out is to order the marriage cert, and quote the father's name as a checking point.

The mother's name does not appear on the marriage records.

You seem to be working from the 'wrong end' on this.

You must start with something which you know is 100% accurate.....then work backwards from that.

Starting from 1839, and trying to tie in a 1901 marriage will cause you untold confusion.

Can you say exactly who you are trying to trace................the name and birth year of someone you KNOW to be right is where you have start

Are you sure it's not the one that Andy found in Stockton? Very close to Darlington.

According to the Tees Valley Indexes the one who married 1899 in Stockton married William B. Smith.

Here's William B. Smith & Mary in 1901. She was born in Darlington and they're living at the same address as the Hootons (her brother?)
