Maybe Louisa got together with Charles the sailor or Charles the prisoner. Stranger things have happened.

Last known address was 2 Albert Road North but I understand that a 1911 search is very expensive

JayneB Report 12 Jan 2008 21:31

That made me laugh!

Where did you get the Louisa Bilay name from?

JaneyCanuck Report 12 Jan 2008 21:31

I think you'll be stuck with theories. At least for now.

Do you know where they were in 1911 -- the address? Even the address from the last birth, if they might have been there?

It costs a bit, but you can get access to the 1911 census if you have an address.

Just when you thought Ancestry couldn't do anything stupider ... check out this list in 1871:

Ann His Wife 40
Charles Her Child 7
Charles Their Child 12
Edmond Her Child 2
Eliza Her Child 2
Ellen Her Child 12
Ellen Their Child 9
Frederick Her Child 7
George Her Child 3
John Her Child 10
Lucy Her Child 6
Mary Her Child 2
Walter Their Child 14
William Her Child 1
William Her Child 1

It's part of a list of workhouse residents -- I was searching for Charles-s any surname born in Prittlewell 1863 +/- two years, and this one came up:

Name: Charles Her Child
Age: 7
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1864
Relation: Inmate
Gender: Male
Where born: Thaxted
Civil Parish: Great Dunmow
County/Island: Essex
Country: England

Not yours, no doubt, but an idea of what yer up against sometimes ... (he's the child of Louisa Bilay?).

Without a birth record I can't prove or disprove who Charles Anderson Juniors father was. As we only have the 3 certificates to go on, all of which say he is Charles Anderson do I just assume that he was a ompulsive liar and accept that I am unlikely to ever know the truth?

I don't think I even found a death cert for him.

Maybe by 1911 he will use his real name/age/place of birth.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 12 Jan 2008 21:18

That's right -- unmarried Anderson woman = Anderson surname.

That's why I looked at those ones born in London around the right time, since the unmarried Emma Anderson from Prittlewell I was following around was working in Paddington in 1871.

If that theory were correct, he may not have known he wasn't born in Prittlewell, since that's where all the family was.

A whole lot of ifs, obviously.

JayneB

JayneB Report 12 Jan 2008 20:59

if he were born to an unmarried Anderson woman wouldn't he have the last name Anderson? In which case there should be a birth record for him, unless he has changed his first name to Charles then the record would be ? Anderson I guess.

Getting slightly confused now

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 12 Jan 2008 20:56

Yeah, the two theories are actually mutually exclusive:

1. He was born to an unmarried woman named Anderson, possibly of Prittlewell

2. He was born to an unmarried woman not named Anderson, could have been anywhere, and later took the surname of his father who was Anderson

If it weren't for that 1881 hawker Charles Anderson, I'd plump for the first theory.

JayneB Report 12 Jan 2008 20:52

Ruled out one George, died aged 6.

If Charles Anderson was not born Charles Anderson I have no hope of ever finding him. I am quite enjoying the speculation over sailors and prisoners, all interesting ideas, especially the sailor as prittlewell is by the coast (although Southend is famous for its pier, not a naval port!)

I have a nasty feeling that this is another family line that will never be discovered.

The 1861 prisoner -- there are 10 prisoners, all of them seamen in the merchant service.

I suspect it was a short-term custody, resulting from a brawl the night before or some such.

JayneB

JayneB Report 12 Jan 2008 20:42

Interesting, but if he is busy serving time he may not have been visiting Essex lol

JayneB

JayneB Report 12 Jan 2008 20:41

Found him. Nice candidate but if he is lying about his place of birth...

Have looked at George Andersons and there are 2 born Rochford (Which I think covers Prittlewell) in 1863. Going to try to find them now.

The 1881 Charles Anderson's birth place appears to be a crock; there's nobody to match him in other censuses or the GRO births.

I should have mentioned -- in 1881 he's on the page after the one Ancestry links to, if you're looking for him.

JayneB

JayneB Report 12 Jan 2008 20:31

Is there any sign of that Charles in the 1861?In theory he should have been in Essex if thats where Charles was born

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 12 Jan 2008 20:26

Oh, you're here!

I was just muddling along with my own thoughts ... ;)

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 12 Jan 2008 20:23

And now for a completely different theory.

His father *was* Charles Anderson, but his mother was unmarried so he was not born with the name Anderson.

1881:

Name: Charles Anderson
Age: 40
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1841
Relation: Lodger
Gender: Male
Where born: Epsom, Surrey, England
Condition as to marriage: unmarried

Civil Parish: Kingston On Thames
County/Island: Surrey
Country: England

Street address: Bridge St
Occupation: Hawker <<<

Registration district: Kingston
Sub-registration district: Kingston

1881 searchable at Ancestry by occupation, that's the only Charles Anderson, hawker.

JayneB Report 12 Jan 2008 20:20

Another starnge thing. if you look at Charles Anderson births Essex 1861+/- 5 you get 11 results (one of them a Frederick Charles), but if you search the 1871 census for Charles Andersons essex b same time frame you only get 2. Where are the others? Did they all die?

JayneB

JayneB Report 12 Jan 2008 20:12

Hi again Katherine,

I like your theory on place names. I would never have thought of that.

I am wondering if he just changed his name around. Maybe I should be looking for George Charles (My Gt grandfather started as Edward George and became George Edward).

There is also a Charles Anderson in the 1881 b London Middlesex, living West Ham that I would like to follow up in a minute. I know he is born in the wrong area but they tended to change place of birth sometimes.

Need to get the 4 kids in to bed first though!

No Charles / Charles George Anderson birth in Rochford reg district (Prittlewell) 1860-1865.
