Hi Michael John
The most certain way to discover the maiden name of Mary Ann Hodges is to purchase the birth cert for one of the children from GRO.
This is the birth registration for their 3rd child:

Herbert Harris Hodges Dec Qtr 1867 Islington 1b 199

and 1st child

Ann Elizabeth Hodges Dec Qtr 1863 Islington 1b 181

You could also look for their marriage on freebmd once you have her surname.

Hi Christine
Sorry I have not been able to locate Charles and Daisy Guy on 1901 census(Ancestry version).
However I have found the birth reg numbers for both Charles(jnr) and Jessamine and as you can see they are not what you expected.

Jessamine Daisy M Guy Dec Qtr 1903 Reigate 2a 207

and

Charles Clarence Guy Dec Qtr 1904 Reigate 2a 202

I suggest you send for Jessamine's birth cert to see what additional info you can glean which may help to find parents at census time.

Mary

Hi again Mary

Another kind person on Genes has found this for me. This is Alfred's parents Ester and George (only George appears to be called Alfred George) in 1871 census.

1871 England Census
about Alfred G How
Name: Alfred G How
Age: 36
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1835
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Ester
Gender: Male
Where born: Norwich, Norfolk, England

Civil Parish: North Shields
Ecclesiastical parish: Western Town
Town: North Shields
County/Island: Northumberland
Country: England

Street address: 31 Mudock? Street

Occupation: labourer in (iron?) works

Condition as to marriage: married

Disability: View Image

Registration district: Tynemouth
Sub-registration district: North Shields
ED, institution, or vessel: 7
Neighbors: View others on page
Household schedule number: 197
Household Members: Name Age
Alfred G How 36
Alfred G M How 6
Catharine How 8
Eliza How 12
Emma How 15
Ester How 34
Henry How 10

As you can see Alfred has a sister called Eliza so it looks as though it was him on the 1891 census. Still no closer to finding out what happened to Margaret and Eliza though.

Hello Mary, I wonder if you could help me. I am looking for my greatgrandfather, Charles Guy born approximately 1875 or thereabouts. He married a Daisy Kendall and they lived in Reigate, Surrey. My grandmother was born in 1901 Jessimine, she had a sister (not sure of names but I think they were Molly and Kay) also an older brother, Charles born around 1900. I have drawn blanks and would be most appreciative of any help you could give me. I believe my great-grandmother might have been born outside of the U.K.

Hi Mary

Thank you for your help.

Very strange... i will have to order the marriage cert after xmas. Got a few others to get as well.

I know there is a connection to Norwich, Norfolk as both Alfred and his father are listed in 1901 census as being born there as is one of Alfred and Isabella's sons.

Hi Mary,

Can you do a look up in the 1841 census for me please.

I'm after a William Holden born in 1840 in Darwen Lancashire

I found him in the 1851 census living at 151 Bolton Street Darwen, but I can't really make out who is parents are. It might be James or Lawrence.

His brothers and sisters are

Alice born in 1832
Mary born in 1834
Jane born in 1838
Thomas born in 1852
Ellen born in 1854

Any help would be appreciated

Simon.

Hi Julie
Looks as if you may have a real mystery here.
I cannot find deaths for either Margaret or Eliza How,also I cannot find a birth reg for Eliza How in County Durham(census says she was born in S Shields).
Found a marriage for :
Alfred George W How June Qtr 1886 South Shields 10a 875.Unfortunately the name of bride is not shown,so you will have to send for cert to get the name.
There is a birth reg for:
John Hall How March 1894 S Shields 10a 731.This is son of Alfred and Isabella.

Good luck if you need more help get back to me,looks as if it may be interesting!!!

Mary
