I think I am going to suggest that Shirley gets the marriage certificate to find out who is Chalres wife, we may be barking up the wrong tree with Dorothy!

Marriages Mar 1840 (>99%)

JOYCE Charles Dunmow 12 115
NEVILL Dorothy Dunmow 12 115
SMITH John Dunmow 12 115
TWEEN Elizabeth Dunmow 12 115

Go to www.gro.gov.uk to order the certificate. The GRO reference number is the set of 2 numbers to the right of Dunmow.

Ask only for Charles Joyce. Fo NOT specify wife's name.

After you get that, follow up with getting Charles birth certificate, which is probably this one

Births Jun 1841 (>99%)

JOYCE Charles Dunmow 12 71

and Alexander's birth certificate

Births Mar 1854 (>99%)

Joyce Alexander Dunmow 4a 318

I've been looking at Multimap - all the places are there - Yewtree, Stagden Cross, Upper Harveys, less than 5 kilometres between them & High Easter I'd say.

'Higgler' - Itinerant peddler. A lot of the Higgler's trade involved barter, rather than money changing hands and the name derives from the resultant haggling.

so there's Joyces, just not Shirley's Joyces!

I wonder if they were transported to Oz ........ I know some were sent out there for a term and could return at the end. But the whole family??????????

It's strange to have them missing for so many censuses.

Yes but some went of their own free will, & returned.
