This is the only one i found that really fit.... it is the 1901 census obviously.. His mother Minnie is a widower and was born in Guildford in Surrey, And it states she was 'Living on own means'.
it would obviously be best to order your Great Grandparents marriage certificate as that will have his father's name on it.

Looks like that wasn't him after all, the death records for Dec 1/4 state that David Simpson died aged 76 in Havering. that would make his DOB 1891. the following record seems to fit:

Hello Laura thanks for the offer of look ups. I am looking for information on a John Oliver, he was born in 1857 at Newburn Newcastle upon Tyne. His fathers name was John and his mothers name was Jane Glendinning. In 1886 he married a Janet Kirkpatrick in Edinburgh, she came from Glencairn in Scotland. At this time John was living at 90 Southey St. Gateshead and was a waiter in a public house. Any help would be very much appreciated.
