I don't think he's your man either. Why would that middle name just suddenly appear? It's such a distinctive name that it seems unlikely he would call himself that. Also seems unlikely that he would have been in SA for so long when his daughter was over here - how did she get here and who did she come here with??(I know you don't know the answer to that yet, but just thinking aloud)

How frustrating!! One step forward.. and ?!

I personally don't think this is your Edwin/Edward. There is no mention of him nursing, I accept he COULD have switched to Vet nursing, but that's a bit of a leap of faith, and where would he suddenly pluck Guido from ?!

Perhaps you could ask if Guido was a common SA name?

I think its more likely, that although he was in Pretoria when he was discharged, that actually he was somewhere else for the bulk of the time.

Another question to ask (thinking aloud) may be how common it was for soldiers to stay on in SA after discharge in those days.

Hope you get another breakthrough soon...

I've done a quick check through some of my resources and the only E.
with the surname LIVERMORE is the following...

E.G. LIVERMORE in Pretoria in 1909, possibly involved in veterinary work.

Edward Guido LIVERMORE died in the Transvaal (province in which Pretoria was) in 1949, was married to Violet (maiden name (BOURKE).
She died in the Transvaal in 1926.

If this is the correct person, the estate files would be useful as the starting point.

The estate files contain a death notice which is completed soon after death, usually but not always, by next-of-kin. It is a legal document used to inform the relevant authorities of the death and becomes the founding document in the estate file.
The files would have to be accessed in person.
On the death notice form you will find (the extent and accuracy of the information is dependant on who the informant was):
- date and place of birth of the deceased
- sometimes lists the deceased parents' names
- name of spouse(s) and children (including married names of
daughters) of the deceased
- date and place of death of the deceased
- place of residence of the deceased at time of death
- whether the deceased left property (moveable and immovable)

Hi All

Jennifer.. When I was speaking to the man at the Army museum,he asked me to send him Edwins records as he would be able to find out where Edwin was from the list of medals.SO I sent a copy of Edwins whole service record to him and he came back with Edwin searved in Pretoria.

I had a reply back from a lady on the ansestry site in South Africa. She sent me details on an Edward Livermore.I dont think it is him because of his middle name.The lady said that people often changed their names as Edwin did to Edward. But the middle name listed just seems to unusual.What do you think? Also on Dorotheas marriage certificate dated 1930 she had her father down as deceased.

I am also waiting on a rely from the Army Museum with answers to a few of my questions.

P.s.. the medals (didn't realize you had some) will have bars on them, these tell you where he was at certain times when cross referenced with events in SA...

I've tried Googling too, and looking at what National Archives have on nursing records, but nothing relevant. Trouble is, we don't know whether he stayed in SA or came back.

Also, if they have some records on him, which it sounds as though they do, was there any mention of wife etc???? Can you ask them to send a copy of what they have?

Hi again peeps.
It is really good news isnt it.

Diane I only have the information as posted in the copy of the email. But I did email back and ask the question re the regiment.I have also asked if the medals Edwin received could be explained to me. So fingers crossed I get a speedy reply.

I have posted a message on Ancestry24 a South African site and I have also emailed a lady in South Africa who has a great interest in researching british military who served in South Africa.

I have 'googled' Edwin/Nursing/Pretoria but nothing really has come up.

If anyone has any ideas as to what I can do now then please shout.

UPDATE.....
I have what I think to be a great breakthrough on Edwin Livermore.I reveived an email today from the Army Medical Museum. I have pasted it here for you.It goes as follows..

Dear Dionne,

I have had a chance to look at the papers you sent me. It appears Edwin/Edward was a trained nurse,highly qualified during his time in the army. His records show he was discharged from the army in 1912 in Pretoria, South Africa. I would have thought it likely he remained in the nursing/medical profession ! I hope this has been of some use.

To all interested parties.

I found that William Livermore & family moved to Colchester in 1893 & lived at no 9 Balkerne Lane. In 1905 he moved to no 42 Maldon Road then in 1911 he moved to no19 Alexandra Road where he stayed until his death in 1940. When he died it would appear that his wife Sarah moved to Copford Essex to live with her daughter/sil where she died, both are buried in Colchester cemetery. This info is from the Electoral Rolls in Colchester library.
Dionne has been updated.
William & Sarah were married in 1883 so 1933 would be there Golden Wedding anniversary, will have a look for that.
