I received an email today as follows.....

Dear Mrs Kendrick

Thank you for your enquiry. We don't hold any electoral registers here, but we do have some street/directories covering the years 1953 (not 1952) to 1960 for Ramsgate. These reveal that 8 Arklow Square, Ramsgate was Aivleys Guest House, run by P Chamberlain and Mrs S Cross.

I hope this helps to put the photograph into some context.

I spoke to my father and he said he could remember the name Cross.
He then said that when his school closed down for the summer all children without family to go to were sent away for two weeks in the Summer. So it looks like this was just a guest house that he stayed at. But I am really glad that he has happy memories of his time there as he didnt have many happy times as a child.

Good afternoon.

Thankyou for the updated information.

Would it be at all possible for someone if they have the time to make the call for me.I am at work from 8.30am until 5pm Monday to Friday and I dont get home until 6pm most nights. Idont think I will be able to contact anyone after 6pm. I am only allowed to use the phone at work for emergancies.So I might get into trouble if caught.

I agree... Ramsgate library will probably look up the electoral register for you for 1955/7 by email, I've had some libraries do the same for me.

Would be tempted to get in touch with the Family History Society in Kent/Ramsgate. A similar society in Scotland has helped me so much in the past fortnight giving me the names of people living at various addresses at various years dating back to the eary 1900s.

Hi Nicola.

Thankyou so much.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that we might get a Livermore connection with this address. My dad was born in 1942. He was around 15 in his photo so that would take it to 1956-1957.
But then again it could just be an address where my father was sent to for some respite. I really dont know.

A quick update for you.

A few months ago I wrote to a Pamela Davis.She was the daughter of Edwin William Livermore Junior..
I received and email from her son in law informing me that she had sadly passed away. On talking with his wife he daisd that although Pamelas name was Livermore they didnt recognise any of the other names that I had given them. So there cant really be a connection..So again another brick wall.

My mother accidently found a very old photo of my father aged about 15. He is stood with three friends outside a back door of a house. He is holding a dog. When he saw the photo he was very clear that the dog belonged to the two women that he use to stay with.He remembered the dog with great love and effection. On the back of the photo was the written address. It reads ....

8 ARKLOW SQUARE
RAMSGATE.

I have done a quick search but so far nothing.

Thanks for the update, it was good to hear your good news.

It is all very emotional, on a similar note, on Friday I posted a letter to the cousin of my father's half brother (my father is aged 71) - so fingers crossed the cousin will be in touch with me and I can get my dad in touch with his half brother. Then hopefully the half brother in turn will be able to let my dad have photo's of his father.

Hope we get another update from you soon.

Had a look in Colchester library today & found a street directory for Clacton 1955. There is a Mrs M B W Livermore at 37 Southcliff Park Clacton. That is the only entry for Livermore. Also 2 pics of the orphanage. Will send them on.
What are the names of the people that lived in Clacton area ? Might be able to find them in the directory.

FANTASTIC news!

I hope you've got good photos, don't be afraid of taking them to a good photographic shop to get them "upgraded" if they are looking a bit tired, and do keep digital copies!

Your father must be utterly amazed at what you have managed to find.

On the subject of the 70yo friend I was helping to find her grandfather's birth mother - who we found worked in a grocer's shop in Putney, where he had been taken as a small child, no doubt to visit her without knowing it was his real mother.... we have found her grave.

Its complicated as her employer purchased the grave for her and another long-serving employee, and we are now trying to trace his estate to see if we can find who legally holds the deeds to the grave so that the remaining family can put a memorial on the grave (there are 17 living cousins from that grandfather). Yesterday we got the death certificate of the employer, and now we are applying for his will.

This lady who had to give up her son for adoption back in 1886, never married (or had any further children to our knowledge), she would never have dreamt that so many years after her death in 1935, people would be searching to find her grave and remember her. I think its so touching, and its so special for your father to be able to see a picture of his father, we haven't managed to trace photos yet, but are still on the case.

To everyone who has a "gap" in their past, don't give up the search, there are amazing people here and elsewhere to help you, and so much information coming online all the time.

Hi everyone

I hope that you are all enjoying your weekend. I have an update for you all.

Although there are no further updates on the Livermore side of my fathers family tree, I have great news regarding the Sloper side of things. As you might remember I have been having contact with my cousin Pamela. She is the daughter of Jean Ann. Jean Ann is my fathers sister and she was taken by her father to live in Wales.
Today I received some wonderful photographs. A photo of Jean Ann when she was very young. If you were to put a photo of my father in his younger days next to hers you would think they were twins.
There was another photograph of her taken only a few years before she died and to be quite honest it was frightening. She was the splitting image of her mother Dorothea Maud Livermore. So alike it was uncanny.
But the best of all was that I received to photographs of my grandfather. My fathers dad. There is no denying that my father wasn’t his son. You can even see my brother in his eyes.
I took the photographs round to my fathers today. It was wonderful for him being able to see his family. He got very emotional when for the first time in 66 years he finally got to see pictures of his father I took my dad into town today and we bought two picture frames for the photographs of his father. They are now hung on the wall pride of place in my dads home.
I am now in the process of obtaining photographs for Pamela as she has never seen pictures of our grandmother (Dorothea). I am also sending her pictures of my father in his younger days. If any of you are interested in seeing any of the photographs then please email me your address and I will be more then happy to send you copies to see.
