Dionne, what is the possibility that he went straight back to Africa as soon as he was discharged? And maybe it was the mother of the children that brought them back here once he had died...?

Dionne

I have pm'd you reference your question yesterday, unfortunately not able to help.

However I have just logged on to scotlandspeople and did a search on e livermore 1900-1956 and there is one match. I do not have any credits left, so not able to view the record, but it costs 6 quid for a few searches. Or there may be someone on here who has credits who could look for you. Fingers crossed this helps you.

Good evening Ann

I to think he died at a young age.I have always had that feeling. Both Daughters had him down as deceased on their marriage certificates. Not forgetting Dorothea was only 21 when she married. but where did he die?lol. I am still looking.

I think he must have received a pension. His length of service would have merited a pension, and his service record wouldn't have been kept if he hadn't received one.

Great tohear that you've found someone connected to the family! Hope they can shed some light on the mystery!

I think, although obviously have no proof, that he died very shortly after he left the Army, or he was still alive when his daughter got married!

Hi Ann

Thankyou so much again.

I was talking to my husband who is ex service (Navy). He was only saying earlier that he thinks Edwin was discharged on medical grounds.if this was the case because of the length of service he thinks Edwin might not have received a pension. This might also fit in with Edwin dieing at a young age as well.

On a more positive note I have found a tree match on Genes for Edwins Father and Grandfather. I have emailed the tree owner.Fingers crossed she might be able to give me some further details.

I am still so confused as to why we cant find a death for Edwin. We know he came back to England. So where did he die, lol. I believe that Dorothea is looking down on me and have a very good laugh, lol

What I meant to say was that the register I looked at was for those discharged to pensions due to length of service.

Hello Dionne

I've also looked for Edwin/Edwards death, in England, but haven't found it yet. Also while I was at Kew today, I had a look at the register of pensions which started in 1912. It's in date order,so I looked a few weeks either side of the date he was discharged, and he wasn't there. So I'm wondering if he was discharged due to some sort of disability, but don't think there's a register for those as late as 1912. Don't worry that you didn't find the births or marriage in the Army registers - it's very common for them not to be there - I know because I've looked for loads of them!

Many thanks to Ann and all of you kind people that have taken the time and trouble to assist Dionne in unravelling the complicated story surrounding my husband's roots. This is becoming better than any Catherine Cookson novel. With all your advice we have now secured several certificates etc, the contents as some of you will know having followed this story showing huge descrepancies in the few things my husband was told by his mother. The South African part is intrigueing and hopefully in time we will be able to finally have a beginning to this story.
Thanking you all.
Sharon (Dionnes mum).

Hi Susan

Thankyou for your offer of help with Arthur but I am fine with him. Worthing was the the place that my father met Dorothea when contact resumed again.

Arthur met Dorothea when he was working in London. He came from Worthing. So after the marriage Dorothea moved into Arthurs home and from what I can understand Arthurs son from a previous marriage took an instant dislike to Dorothea. He didnt agree with the marriage. His father was 74 and Dorothea 62

The death certificate I had was for Dorothea and not Arther.but I do know that Arthur was cremated in worthing and Dorothea had requested that when she died she wanted to be with Arthur in Worthing.

I have also spent alot of time this morning searching for Edwin over in this country after May 1912 as this is when he was discharged from the Army. But I have still come across nothing for him.Its as if he vanished.

Thanks
DIonne

Wow, this is interesting!!!

Dionne - I live in Worthing, is there anything I can do for you with regards to Arthur Knight? Were there addresses given in Worthing on their marriage certificate? If so, I could take a photo for you or maybe I could look up a copy of the local newspaper to see if there was a wedding announcement etc?

I wonder how Dorothea came to be in Worthing?

I think you say that you have a copy of Arthur's death certificate, did he die in Worthing? Maybe he was cremated in Worthing Crematorium?

More than happy to help if I can.

I am having trouble with the site find my past.I have credits left but everytime I go to view a page the page freezes and then internet explorer shuts down.I have gone to their help page and downloaded DaJu as required. But I still get the same problem. I have emaied the technical team.Until I hear back from them there is little I can do.

Dionne Report 2 Nov 2007 19:29

Thankyou again friends.

Wayne I dont think the girls would have had the name Harvey because Harvey was the name of Edwards mother and he was being called Livermore when he joined the Navy.

Mary Im not to sure about that marriage.I noted that the middle initial for Edward is an A. His middle name was William. I also worked out he would have been 28 on return to this country and must have died between the age of 28 and 46.(Dorotheas marriage certificate has his as deceased in 1930)

A question? If Edward and the mother of his children didnt get married in South Africa, would the mother have been able to come into this county as she would be South African and not an official dependent of Edwards.

i wonder if the children were born over there with their mothers name and only took their fathers name when their parents married upon return.
