Bookmarking - nearly missed my daily chapter...
How sad for your father Dionne to go through that as a child. This thread shows that family history research is not about badly transcribed names on a census page but about real people and their families.

Hi Dionne
As you know i was there at the beginning of your "journey" and found the sisters your dad didn't know he had .Been following the thread and seeing all the help others have given, I'm glad now your dad has his "home" info even tho it reads very sad ,but i guess any child being put into a home has a sad story behind them. I hope your dad will be glad finally to know what happened to him as a little lad and hopefully he can lay some events to rest now
Its very sad how some children were treated and makes you realise how lucky you were to have had a happy home
Shirley.

I posted all the information that was on the admission record.
The only thing I forgot to write which was right at the bottom of the page was..
Destination..Twickenham date of admission 26.09.51 payment 20 shillings a week.
Then on the other side of the page is a stamp Bisley 9th Sept 1954.

I think Dionne said she'd got the 2 medal cards. I looked for any possible WW1 records for him, but they weren't there.
Also, thinking aloud - I don't know where the orphanage fits in -I assume there were no dates on the document. Why Clacton, when his school and address weren't close?? And when?? If we could track down where the records for the orphanage are held, perhaps the baptism might confirm his fathers details???

Thats ok Nicki. Beleive you me this thread has got very confusing from time to time. You are not the first. A quick update for you. We have all the infomation needed on the Sloper family tree. I firmly beleive that Herbert Sloper was my dads father and I have been able to trace many ancesters on the Sloper side. We are now concentraing on my fathers mothers side Livermore. More importantly Dorotheas father who was Edwin Livermore.Trying to find out where he went when dischared from the Army, when he died and who Dorotheas mother was. Are you with me so far?lol.Hope this clears things up a little. Thanks Dionne x

I had a google and it seems there was a Bridge School at Wealdstone (Harrow) You might be able to write to the Local Education Authority (Brent?) for records of dad's admission etc.
also from google there was a John Grooms Orphange opened in 1932 in Edgeware, not sure if this is the right one.
Also Essex council, www.essexcc.gov.uk and search for family history, there is some kind of online catalogue, SEAX
Have to dash now, kids need computer for homework

I am thinking, she definately married Arthur Knight so would she have had to show divorce papers (from Sloper) when she married?
Does it say on her marriage cert to Arthur if she is spinster, widow, or divorced?

Have just read the beginning of your story again. I think it is worth writing the to the Army Personnel Centre in Glasgow to see if you can have access to your grandfather's Army file.
You have his name - do you have his dob? You would not need to know what arm, service or corps he was in nor his military number, they are more interested in full name and dob. If you have his full name and date of birth then they would be able to locate his file from the archives at Hayes if indeed he was military. I have been successful with four files that belonged to relatives that were in the military in the 1930s.
It might just give you a bit more info.
Just a thought.

Hi Selena
No Dorothea never married Shipton. She just took his name. On her death certificate Formally known as Sloper and Livermore. She also insisted that Shipton went to prison and she never married him.Perhaps for once she was telling the truth. Dionne
