Hi Nell I have a Metropolitan Police Constable on 1901 census: William CARTER, aged 32, born Kings Norton, Worcs address on census: 1 Walton Villas, Manor Rd, Enfield, London. Wife Harriet, born Plumstead. On 1891 census, William was at Police Station, Hunter Place, Pancras, London as a police officer aged 22. Any help with details re his police service much appreciated. Hi Helen Only last week I discovered a distant relative of mine was a policeman based at Bow Street Station. His name was Frederick Knights, he was a constable and was there at the time of the 1891 census although I can't find him on the 1901 one.

Nell - I looked the last time I was at Kew for someone and just couldn't find a number for him. CHARLES GOSLING. He was a constable in 1891 aged 31 and Met police sgt 1901 aged 41 in Islington. He was born in Slimbridge Glos. Could you see if you can find something for my next trip to Kew. Jan

Grace I found this on the National Archives pages about the Met: 'The Metropolitan Police force is augmented by the Special Constabulary: private citizens who undertake police duties. Details of the careers of special constables are published in Police Orders (MEPO 7 ). An 1875 nominal roll of officers sworn in to supplement the work of the regular force is held under reference MEPO 2/143 . It gives date of appointment, place of work as a constable and name of sponsor.' nell

Hello Nel. My GG Grandfather was a policeman in 'T' division, Hammersmith around 1870 to late 1890's. Anything more would be of great help to me. I tried to get onto the Police Orders site a couple of years ago but messed up the registration form on-line. Unfortunately you only get one bash at it! hi helen,sorry for not getting back sooner,and yes that is the correct spelling,but have found rellies with roddaway,roderway,rodway,and the best yet rodney,the info i have his from is son,who was only 3 when his father died,he seems to think his father was still in the met about 1922,dont spend to much time searching, as i could find him else where,regards tony
