Frances, sorry only just retrieved this thread. Cheshunt isn't in the Met area now so it certainly wouldn't have been in 1901. You would need to contact Hertfordshire constabulary, who are based in Welwyn Garden City, or alternatively the Herts Archives in Hertford. nell

Carol This is all that came up when I typed in the warrant number: Date Warrant First name Last name Rank Number Station Reason PO Date 08/03/1887 56467 BROOKER PC 218 W GRATUITY 05/03/1887 Gratuity means that he left without a pension. W was Brixton division. You won't therefore find a pension record at Kew, but you can use his warrant number to find his service record. This will give you a record of when and where he worked in the Met. As he was a PC when he left, he wasn't promoted at all. On the back of the service record [this is on a page in a big bound book] is the info he gave when he joined, so it will have his date and place of birth, any previous public service, height, weight, chest measurement, hair and eye colour. nell

Carol I think you might find some answers if you get Edwin's death cert - he may have died on duty (though I would have thought his widow would receive some money in that case) or perhaps he left and did another job, not qualifying for the pension for whatever reason. nell

Alva Report 22 Apr 2005 18:47

Hi there: Could you possibly do a look up for ALBERT MALLETT born in Grundisburgh, Suffolk. On the 1881 census he is listed as a police constable, living at 15 Andrew St. By 1901 he is on a policeman's pension and living at 26 Grange Road. He passed away in March of 1934 at this last address. Any information is so much appreciated. Thank you, Alva
