SHEILA - this is the closest I could come up with from 1851 census, don't know if its the right one - I'm afraid it doesn't help with the parents, but if you can get the correct marriage cert for your Samuel it will at least have his father's name on it, as well as (hopefully) Samuels age, which should then help you narrow down the marriage for his parents and therefore his mum's name! Samuel's birth won't be on freeBMD as the dates fall before civil registration was required - you need, if possible, to go to the relevant records office and go through the parish records for that one. Chris - try thinking laterally - what other names might they have been known as? Did Joseph have any siblings? (I have found a fair few rellies living with aunts/uncles in different parts of the country to the rest of their family!) The way I see it, eliminate all the absolutely impossibles, and your answer will be in he stuff thats left, no matter how improbable! (many apologies for the ruination of that quote! lol)

Aaah - Christopher! Never assume!! I got some details from my mum relating to her grandmother. She apparently had a sister called Charlotte, but everyone called her Lottie....took me a heck of a long time, and alot of wasted effort, to find that she was actually christened Lottie! I've also been looking for a Thomas ('cos that what the census said) but his birth record has him as Tom...just waiting for the cert to confirm that one!!
